Adding a coating to an existing structure

Hello everyone,

I am a new user of Autodesk Inventor and I am looking a way to add a layer of another material to an existing surface structure that is not just a plane layer but acts like a coating.

I hope someone can help.

Thank you in advance.

I think this is a very difficult job to model an extra layer. Why not just comment on the drawing?

Hello @Anonymous !

I see that you are visiting as a new member to the Inventor Forum. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

From your name, I would guess you are german, there is also a german Forum here.

This video from @Neil_Cross shows a good workflow to work with coatings, especially regarding the weight of paint for example.

But also @Anonymous is right, that sometimes it's easier to just write it on the drawing, depending on what you are actually trying to achieve.

Hope this helps!

I'm a fan of his youtube channel, but didn't see this one before. Still a lot of work though 🙂

I think you might have been misled by the previous responses.

AFAIK what you want to do is relatively easy to do and I have been doing exactly that for years.

Can you Attach a file(s) here that  you would like to add physical coating?

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately I cannot post the file since it's confidential material. Could you describe a simple way to add a coating?

Standard practice is to make up a dummy file that exhibits characteristics similar to your proprietary data.

That is what I would have to do to fulfill your latest request, but I would be purely guessing about your true Design Intent.

Three typical examples that I have used:

1. Physical coating of paint to get accurate weight and volume of paint used.

2. Physical coating of Teflon on metal baking pan.

3. Overmolding of plastic coating over another substrate.
