Adaptive part not adapting

Hi All,

We recently started a new way of making assemblies, a master sketch that all parts & sub assemblies link to and update accordingly. the premise is great but inventor's ability to do this not so much.

I have attached a zip file with my main assy (03MD01-06-0000) and the master sketch (03MD01-06-SKETCH) where I change the height & width, most parts 'adaptive' sketches have not adapt and I don't understand why.

I know there is a bunch of post on this but none helps me resolve this issue, if anyone can help I will be eternally grateful.

There are a few drawbacks to your method of modeling using a master sketch.  The first is it is confusing to others that must work with your design.  If you are the only designer that has to work with it maybe, but if you are called away, leave your job or worst, someone else will have a lot of difficulty picking up where your left off.  Second, Inventor is a great adaptive tool but it you have too many adaptive features that have to "constantly" update, you are asking for degraded performance and a lot of searching if one goes hay-wired.

I fixed your model, unfortunately, I only have access to Inventor 2020 and that is not what you are using so I cannot return it to you.  I worked from the browser tree at the lowest assembly that had a problem updating.  It turned out to be a resolve link to one missing M12 nut.  Once I replaced the reference, it all updated fine.  You can use the same method.

The assembly I found was:

Hi! I took a quick look at the assembly. Adaptivity is excessively  used. Most of the parts adapt to the skeletal part. However, there are quiet a few parts also adapt to other adaptive parts. This is not a good practice. You should keep adaptive relationship clean and easy to understand. It will take some time to sort of the problems.

Actually, I think you will be better of starting from scratch using the skeletal modeling approach. Derive the skeleton to each part and model accordingly.

Many thanks!

Thanks, I will look into this, all parts should only be linked to the sketch and no other parts

Hi  jhackney1972,

Everyone in our office is now guided to this method of modeling, it is till a learning curve and each new model is getting better.

My model does have the nut in but all the parts is still all over the place.

Is your model looking like a container after the nut is found?

It will be quicker to update to 2020 if you don't mind sharing your model?
