2022 Installation, Part II

I have install privileges for the 2022 products and patches. I remote into other's PC's and install. On one machine I had problems. On starting a session acad.exe would immediately crash and an error window window opens saying so (I did not save a snip, I can do tomorrow if it happens again. The message is short and sweet, Acad.exe can't continue or some such message). No splash screen or anything, it bombed immediately. I uninstalled, tried to re-install but the installer wouldn't run because it thought 2022 was still installed. So I ran the Microsoft install/uninstall repair utility and then reinstalled successfully. I can open the app and run it.

 

However, the person who uses this PC tried to open it and the same thing happened - acad.exe immediately crashed. I was psyching myself up for another uninstall - MS utility - reinstall, but when I log into the machine I find that I can run 2022 as expected.

 

So the question is - where do I look for something user-specific that is messed up with the installation? I can't login as the other user, but tomorrow I will have him reset settings to default to see if that fixes anything. It shouldn't because he has never run the software so he couldn't really change any settings yet, but who knows?

 

this machine also had 2021 installed which was removed using a clean uninstall. It also has 2020 installed on it which is in use.

 

thoughts?

Have this person create a new Windows Profile and try that.

Besides the valuable advise that @Pointdump  provided I would also verify that you have all window's updates on the system. There was a recent .NET update (last month or so), and that could be having an effect.

Thanks for the replies, fellas. Re-creating the Windows User profile is complicated here and would probably involve IT, which for the City I work for is more involved than I care to go. I wonder if I were to erase any C3D 2022 files from his %user% account? Might be worth a shot since if I can't fix it by the end of the day tonight after the machine is available I will uninstall/reinstall. Yay.

 

The PC should be up-to-date as far as Windows goes - that is again controlled by IT and they don't let that slide. Below is the error message Timmy got when he tried to start C3D this a.m. resetting settings to default didn't work. This happens almost immediately after starting the app.

The Adesk Knowledge article cites both of your suggestions, by the way - new user profile and Windows Update.

So on this user's PC i did a clean uninstall using Windows uninstall, then erasing/deleting the folders and registry keys cited in the various clean uninstall articles by Autodesk. I first tried to reinstall but the installer found that C3D 2022 was already installed (this *after* the uninstall), so I ran the Microsoft Install/Uninstall troubleshooter. It took 3+ hours to complete.

 

After this I ran utilities that fixed or updated all the .NET and C++ apps following advice from Autodesk https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/learn-explore/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-r... 

 

Then in (re)installed C3D 2022 and it let me.

 

It runs fine for me when I log in under my user account. It will not run when Tim tries logged into his account. We had IT delete his Windows user profile and reset it, but he still can't run C3D. I am going to check to make sure acad.exe isn't limited to administrators, but I don't see why it would be. After that our next step is to have IT format and rebuild the machine. Oh joy. I have about 6 machines to go to install 2022 on  😕

Out of curiosity have you switched over to named user for your subscription, so that each user logs in, and something is hosed that may need to be fixed on his Autodesk user profile?

We did switch to named user licensing. The guy has 2020 installed and can run that ok. Before an IT rebuild I am going to try one last thing - strip every bit/byte I can find of Autodesk installed products from the machine and try 2022 one last time. Otherwise it's FORMAT C:
