MentalRay dll not loading-MAX17

When opening an existing Max16 file (with mental ray as render) in 17, I get missing dll errors for mental ray.  The path in 17 is set to the location where the files are located, but they don't to load.

Obviuosly I can not select mental ray as the render in 17. So I have been playing with ART but not getting the same results as MR gives.  I need to stay with MR to finish current projects.  More time spent with ART and adjusting settings might help....we will see.

Thanks.

I seem to be having a similar problem.

I have installed both of the files listed in this thread. I also added the additional path in the 3rd Party Plug-Ins System Path Configuration.

I am getting a slew of errors - please see attached.

I have both the listed in the Program Files in my Control Panel:

NVIDIA mental ray and IRay feature plugins and render plugins

I have tried to attach the relevant screenshots.

Any direction is appreciated.

Hello everyone!

I am facing a critical problem. Just trying my hands on new 3d studio max 2017. After doing a full installation, I noticed that the Mental Ray renderer was missing from the render list :

Also, please note that while installing the 3d studio max 2017, I DID NOT got any option for installing mental ray plugin (which usually shows up in the install list) :

initial_setup.jpg

I did some research and came across the following threads highlighting similar problems:

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/installation-licensing/3ds-max-2017-mental-ray-install-issue/m-p/62864...

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/installation-licensing/mentalray-dll-not-loading-max17/td-p/6282811/hi...

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/3ds-max-forum/how-do-i-install-mentalray-render-engine-in-3ds-max-2017...

And as one of the solutions in the above threads, I downloaded the Mental Ray folder and tried doing a standalone install on mental ray,

but unfortunately I get the following message in the end:

Untitled-1.jpg

And I noticed that NO files are copied in the installation folder after this message. Which clearly means that nothing is installed.

However, I would also like to state that when installing from the MentalrayPlugin Folder (by clicking the MentalrayPlugins2017.msi file, the package gets installed fully but Mental Ray DOES NOT shows up in the render settings.

I am not sure why I am not able to install from Mentalray2017.msi file and get the above error!

I am on Windows 8 (not 8.1), could it be because of that?

I have disabled/uninstalled ALL the anti-virus, spam-ware programs.

Hope to receive some help on this!

Thanks Tony for passing along the MR installer!!!!

Morice,

In 3dsMax go to Configure System Paths (under Customise) and add the line under the "3rd Party Plug-ins" tab;

"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2017\Plugins\NVIDIA\Plugins\"

Mental Ray Install Issue.JPG

That should fix things for you (I too had installed the rar files and nothing was fixed until I added that path above".

Hope that fixes things 🙂

Hi.

I had sort of the same problem although the error message only referred to mrmaterialattribs.gup as the picture shows. I tried all the previous suggestions but none of it worked. I searched inside the 3ds max installer and found the Mental Ray installer and the .gup file. I ran the .msi file and that fixed the problem!

You can find it in: 3ds max 2017 root folder\x64\MentalrayPlug\MentalrayPlugins2017.msi

Hi,

To which directory should we extract the file to?

I have also experienced issues with Mentalray, not loading in max17

Thanks

Hello @Anonymous,

Welcome!

Maya 2017 & newer versions now use Solid Angle's Arnold renderer, not Mental Ray. Please review the Changes to rendering in Autodesk Maya 2017. To continue to use Mental Ray for Maya 2017 you would need to purchase a license from Nvidia, you can read more about the change & what you can do in the article provided.

I hope this was hopeful. Smiley Happy

Try to install both of those files, Mentalray2017.msi it's not enough, I found them in installation folder

c:\Autodesk\WI\Autodesk 3ds Max 2017\x64\MENTALRAY\Mentalray2017.msi
c:\Autodesk\WI\Autodesk 3ds Max 2017\x64\MENTALRAYPLUG\MentalrayPlugins2017.msi

Kudos to you ! This is the only advice that worked for me

Tony,

What do I need to do with the Mentalray.rar file?  I have it downloaded, but I'm not sure what to do with it now...

I am having the same issues discussed earlier in this forum.

Thank you!
