Maya does not open on macOS Catalina

Anonymous
Not applicable

I downloaded the student edition of Maya 2020, ran the setup and everything was working fine and today, the app just won't open! The icon just bounces in the dock and then gives me this error - The app "Maya.app" can't be opened. I did everything. Deleting all files and folders related to Autodesk and Maya, and reinstalling it. Still won't work.
My machine: MacBook Pro 13" 2018, 2.3GHz Quad-core, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD. The 2019 version of Maya works fine.
Is there any solution to this?

Hi @Anonymous

Take a look at this thread on Maya 2019 and Catalina OS, the same applies for Maya 2020 system requirements here that it can be installed but may have some limitations.

Hi. I did check the thread, but that does not provide a solution to the above-mentioned problem. I want to run Maya 2020 on my MacBook Pro 13" but the app is not opening at all. The icon bounces in the dock for a few seconds and goes away. Sometimes gives me an error - The app "Maya.app" can't be opened.

Catalina does cause problems as it's not 100% supported just yet - you may want to try a clean uninstall and reinstall to see that it helps get the app loading again, or try a fix: https://autode.sk/2A58LnM

My classmates who own MacBooks on Catalina have Maya up and running without any issues. In my case, the first install was a success and 3 days later, the app just won't open. The mentioned solutions are not working.

Thank you! I tried the method mentioned. It still doesn't work somehow! I don't know if this information will help but, inside /Library/Application Support/Autodesk/AdskLicensingService there are absolutely no files. The folder is just empty. Even after a fresh install, there are no files inside that folder.

Darn! I'm sorry to hear that! - I'm reaching back out to our Maya team for help but was also suggested to add it to the permissions list, files and folders or documents so it will hopefully open. If you're still having trouble you can visit here: https://autode.sk/391Oegu or reach out to support directly: https://www.autodesk.com/company/contact-us

Is maya added in the OSX Security settings for Accessibility and Full Disk Access?

Some ideas to try, at least possibly get more info

try running maya from a Terminal window.  Any stdout/stderr messages would then be output to the terminal

Launch with command:

/Applications/Autodesk/maya2020/Maya.app/Contents/MacOS/Maya

see if any messages are output

check for any related log files in your temporary directory

$TMPDIR

ls -lrt $TMPDIR

warnold's suggestion isn't a bad one either. That should give us more data as to where it is hanging.

If you aren't sure how to run Maya from the terminal do the following:

On Mac

press: command button along with the space bar (to post spotlight)

type: Terminal

when the Terminal opens type: /Applications/Autodesk/maya2020/Maya.app/Contents/MacOS/Maya

or

/Applications/Autodesk/maya2019/Maya.app/Contents/MacOS/Maya if you are using 2019

/Applications/Autodesk/maya2018/Maya.app/Contents/MacOS/Maya if you are using 2018

Maya should try and start. As it's attempting to start you will see a bunch of text returned in that terminal. Copy and paste it into a TextEdit txt file and send it to us please.

Also, you could try the Security settings as well that I have mentioned above. In addition to that, try and delete your preferences file. You can do this by:

pressing: command and spacebar for spotlight

type: Terminal

in the Terminal type: rm -rf /Users/yourUsername/Library/Preferences/Autodesk/maya/2020

or

rm -rf /Users/yourUsername/Library/Preferences/Autodesk/maya/2019 for Maya 2019

etc...

Hi

I tried everything I could but could not get Maya to run. So I downgraded to Mojave and now it's working fine.

Thank you all who tried to provide a solution for me! 🙂

I had been experiencing the same issue. Selecting the "Macintosh HD Data" drive instead of "Macintosh HD" during installation solved it. The separation between the two is a new feature that came with Catalina.

If this doesn't help, you may also want to try enabling 'Full Disk Access' permission from MacOS "Preferences > Security & Privacy > Full Disk Access" for Maya and Maya Installer (if you do the latter, you should also do a reinstallation now that the installer has full disk access).

You could get us those log files.

in a new Terminal type the following lines individually pressing enter after each line:

cd /var/folders/rt/nc649t_s2f90dlbrbl8s78dr0000gn/T/

open ./

After you run the open ./ command sting, look inside that temp directory for a MayaCLM and CLM log file.

Zip them up and post attach them here.

start Maya from the terminal again and make sure that it didn't change the location to where it dumps those log files at. If it returns a different directory then search in that directory.
