Installation Information in General

Hi Team,
I have a major question here in regards to "Installation Information in General"...
Are there instances when, or where a "New Load", or Re-load / Installation, or Re-installation can "over-write" the existing folder structures or the basic layout of AutoCAD?
The reason I ask is that after having several versions of the software loaded obviously there will be differences. I have noticed when I personally load AutoCAD it seems to work much better than when my "IT" group does the load, or pushes down an upgrade. Keep in mind, (since I am on subscription), I have no control about which AutoCAD version I am allowed to use in my office.

The best example I have is the running versions of AutoCAD2017 on my 2 computers... With my personal load (on my laptop) the program seems to "Fly" with no issues other than the occasional glitch here and there. the worst problem (in which I got my hand slapped) was remapping to the license server. With my desktop / IT Load, I have all kinds of issues. Keep in mind this was an "IT policy group load" so... there was and continues to be all kind of issues. Usually, I will try a version at home (the 30 day trial) and provided our office is supporting that version, I will simply export my menus (custom *.pgp files, or *.lsp etc., etc., etc…) load / install the newer version & then import my custom / back-up files. There usually are no issues and like I said before, at worst there may and issue mapping to the license server.

I’m hoping to "over-write" the IT load, (if possible) in order to get my desktop working as well as my laptop which is why I am asking the question here on the forum.

As usual if anyone has any helpful information it would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

Milt

are you asking can you go against IT policy?

yes you can overwrite the menus but if its policy that is something you need to go over internally

Darren or Autodesk,

I guess the best way to put this is... Are there "standard-load" AutoCAD formats available?

From home I usually just go online and get the download. In the office that's not the policy. Not that I am being blocked, or prevented from going on to the Autodesk website but, our IT group would prefer that we get software from the group policy administrator. In the past, the IT persons/group would use the "Typical" loads of AutoCAD, instead of the "Full or Custom" loads of AutoCAD and there would be a lot of tools (like the "Express Tool", or "Design Center") that would be left out. Additionally, the options to "Migrate Settings" would not work properly.

Also out IT group had a habit of removing "All" Autodesk products (including "Addon-ons" or "Object Enablers") thus actually "breaking AutoCAD" for those of us that need Civil , MEP or parametric functions of AutoCAD (for BIM Use).

Keep in mind, we do not have an actual in house IT group anymore (the software is loaded outside the office or via an overnight transmission). Basically, when I (we) get an upgrade, we are simply told to lock / secure the computer, leave it overnight (24 hrs) and the next day is when I (we) find out what is working or not working... 😞

My only saving grace is my home laptop. I can work from home, send files to my office and then we are okay, (which is what I am doing today). Not the best work around, but it's better than nothing. I just would prefer to get a "fresh" or the "original file" to do a full install without some IT person determining how they believe I should use AutoCAD...

yea you can get standard downloads

you can this from your autodesk account or from ava: ava.autodesk.com

my guess your admin is creating a custom deployment for your company & using that to install on company machines

which is normal in some companies

Hi Team,  Darren, & Autodesk,

After a reply to Darren (on this forum) and a discussion (online) with the AutoCAD Virtual Agent (AVA) it seems I my have to go "rouge" Please... if someone can prove me wrong simply help. After a numerous attempts to get the proper download, I only have the "exe" to get installers, not the  actual download to install the program. Plus... I'm told I can not just overwrite the program, I have 1st do a full removal of the program. This does me no good since, I do not know how the IT group deployed the installs (again, keep in mind I got handed the program without being asked what do you need for AutoCAD)...

As I stated earlier, I just wanted a clean download to transfer from home to work, (my home machines are incapable of running AutoCAD2018, or AutoCAD2019) including my Windows10 Machine). I'm hoping to get a new machine for home in the future but for now I'm not going out to purchase one just to use a new version of AutoCAD.

Anyway, again any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks again Darren,

If that's the case, meaning I have to use the "*.exe's" , just to get the ball rolling here, I'll give them a shot on Monday. Not sure why the AVA person didn't have a better answer for me but again as you have suggested, I will give it a shot in the dark. I've got noting better to loose other than time.

Wish me luck and hopefully I'll be able to give a thumbs-up + a solution for those of us that have to deal with IT groups that know nothing about the software they are installing for their users...

OK Darren & Autodesk Support Group,

So far "No Luck" (refer to attachments). As suggested I used or downloaded what was available and it seems as if...

1.) I am not getting the right application off of the Autodesk website which is causing the “Failed Installs” or...

2.) As I have mentioned, I believe my “IT” group is causing the failures.

I have been in contact directly with an Autodesk case person and hopefully by the end of the week I'll have additional information. Either way, I’d like a resolution to this issue.

Thanks to all that have replied.

What issues?

Why don't you just talk to your IT? If they have a group policy in place then most likely you won't be able to install anything by yourself anyway... I'm sure they'd help you if you made them aware of the issues you are facing. Neither Autodesk nor us users have any say in what your company does or does not allow... You'll save yourself a lot of time and hassle.

L.O.L....Pola,

Not laughing at you Pola, just the situation sort of...

I haven't had, or seen an "IT" person here in years (probably close to 10 years now)...  I do know a few that work for the company.  They travel back and forth from the 3 or 4 areas that they service here in NJ, so I don't think they would be interested in my issue. The one person I know (in Texas) that does know IT & Autodesk, is not really supposed to help out but to be honest he is the best person since he does both (I met him at Autodesk University).

Anyway... our IT group policy is controlled in Europe so just like trying to get the guy from NJ, it would just be a waste of time. This is why I'm am trying to go rouge, or do these set-up on my own.

if IT has has strict policys on what can be installed there is nothing Autodesk can do they will not find ways around your companies IT policies

so again not sure what your wanting this is an internal issue you need to discuss with whoever you need to have this discussion with

To the Autodesk Team,

"Thank-You" !

As it turned out, apparently the Main Autodesk download page was being "blocked" by our IT policy or the files on the download page are simply corrupt. Working directly with an Autodesk Case worker (Case # 15089904) we were able to resolve the installation issues (everything went right to the default folders). As I said to the case worker...

"I didn't even need to contact -IT-... the installation asked "Automatically" to find my license and it mapped straight to it. No fuzz at all, and to top it off, migrations from ACAD2017 went smoothly.
