DGN files not coming in the right location

Hi all,

I received a few DGN models from our subcontractor and they all come in the right location into Navisworks.

When I import them into Infraworks only one comes in the correct spot and the others seem to be displaced by a few meters. Please see images attached.

Any thoughts?

Hi @Nic.renaudeau

this issue is mostly likely as designed and related to the way InfraWorks treats 3D models.
A 3D model has one point (insertion point) where the model is placed and the geometry at this point should match to the correct location. The farther away and larger the 3D model is, the more deviation you get regarding corrct placing, due to coordinate system settings, earth curvature, etc.

The solution is to use smaller 3D models, if possible divide it to smaller pieces?

Thank you Karsten.

It did work. The issue is that is very time consuming to break up models every time I receive a new submission from consultants. In order to break them up I need to convert everything in the files to civil 3D objects.

Is there another way of converting Grid based coordinates into earth curvature compatible models?

Thank you

Hi @Nic.renaudeau

unfortunately, I am not aware of any other way to treat the (large) 3D models to import without deviation.

Regards,

Karsten.

I found the solution.

It is only a matter of setting up the project in the correct grid based coordinate system.

Hi Nic,

It might have been some time ago, but i'm currently struggling with the same issues. Could you perhaps elaborate on how exactly you resolved this issue?

Regards,

Mark

Hi, sorry for the late reply.

It has to do with the coordinate system. If your model coordinate system database uses projected coordinates, such as LL, grid based coordinate system files wont display correctly. You need to set your IW model to a grid based coordinate system.

Hope that helps
