In Civil 3D, create a [closed] Polyline that defines the boundary you would like to use in Model Builder.

export shp1.JPG

Note: The shape can be as simple or complex as your project dictates.

Use MAPEXPORT, select a location and name for the SHP file.

From the Selection Tab> Polygon> Select manually> use the pick box to select your closed polygon.

export shp2.JPG

From the Options Tab> Other> Treat closed polylines as polygons

export shp3.JPG

NOTE: At the bottom you will see if the object[s] selected were filtered out of your selection. If so, you may need to recreate or reselect your objects.

In InfraWorks, open the Model Builder, and use the right-most import option: Import a polygon to select an AOI [area of interest]. Choosed your newly created SHP file:

export shp4.JPG

In the new version it does not work. I think this is a bug in the version 2018
