make constraints work with lines and splines and more

it seems to me that either the constraint engine is incomplete or crippled when comparing snapping and curve creation to Rhino.

So I cannot create a perpendicular constraint with a line onto a circle ...

I cannot constraint a line to a spline ...

The video shows many of the problems I point out.

will it be posisble to treat lines and splines the same way when doing constraints?

Mathwise I do not see a reason why I can create a tangent line between to circles but not between to spline arc.

All other CAD apps can at least create a curve with that snapping.

Any comment from the developers? I understand constraints in sketches are quite different than drawing in Alias but still ...

Couple of comments.

At the 1 min mark... If you select the line and the circle center point you can make the line coincident to the center point.  A line that passes thru he center of a circle will be perpendicular to the  circumference.  Alternately, if you start the line tool,  mouse over a line or circle/arc and lode the left mouse button down as you drag away from the curve, the line tool will force a perpendicular.  For arcs and circles, the direction you drag away makes a difference.  Drag away near tangent will be tangent, drag away perpendicular will be perpendicular.

We will add a task to allow perpendicular constraint directly so that others don't experience the same problem.

Your comments about splines are true, there are limits to what we can do today. Constraints can only be made to knot points and handles, not to any arbitrary point along the spline.

Hey thank you for the help.

It is really important for me as a designer that lines arcs and splines are treated the same way if this will be possible.

At least giving me the ability to draw them this way like I can do in Alias Rhino etc.

+1 for this. Perhaps the only thing that bothers me about this software

I've run into this often in the month or so that I've been using Fusion 360. I, too, am use to the way Rhino handles drawing tangent arcs and circles with ease and I feel very limited when I can't do the same within sketching with Fusion.

I am able to fillet to a spline which is a tangent operation so clearly it is theoretically possible to do constraints to a spline and limited functionality already exists.  But I am not able to constrain a line tangent to a spline.  Would be great if the capability to do this was added.

I think we're needing more of an anchor point to be possible for any line type to be drawn from any existing geometry, rather than finding a logical point in the line ie. halfway along a spline.

I need this too. Here's a use case. Consider the model below. This need s to be clamped onto a matching surface along the bottom edge, but it is angled, so the clamps won't stick. What I'm going to do it create 1/4" "tabs" that maintain vertical all the way down at key points along the curve. Clearly, these will need to be perpendicular to the tangent line of the curve (which is a spline) at those points for the clamp pressure to work.

So it would be easy to just draw lines and "snap" them as tangential to the spline.

Will have to find a way around it now (maybe add control points?).

this is a 2014 suggestion - we have 2016 now

after 2 years we still cannot do what all other apps like Rhino can do

that is just sad!

Yes, it is really sad (and now we're in 2017!), and what is more sad is that good ideas like this one isn't getting more votes. The Ideastation is filled with so many suggestions that many good ideas seems to just drown.

I'm using the software for 3 days now, brand new to CAD.  I came here to search on how to get rectangles to snap normal to a spline, figuring I was just being dense . I cannot believe you can't do this.  It seems like an obvious feature - even a beginner appreciates the need for this.

@mroek Yeah that’s the issue with ideastation vote systems

but as @jarrod.smith stated some tools and options are also must have as a foundation

Same issue, I was trying to find a solution on Google, but it seems this hasn't been implemented yet? I was trying to have a 3D spline handle tangent to an edge, but in general more spline and constraint control would be very much welcome.

If at least it would snap to the border of the spline (so be tangent 😉 )... Can't understand why such a "basic" function is not here...
