As Autodesk developed Inventor, there is not party that has better acccess to the properties of a hole. Would be a real timesaver if it automatically added a spotdrill-drill-tap operation to a thread hole

Recognising Z axis automatically for multi-axis drilling would be good. I've always handled it so far by programming a single hole, and patterning it. Luckily the parts I've had to make with holes on PCD around the OD of the part have all had regular spacing, although I have been seeing more with larger numbers of holes. As far as automatic spot drilling is concerned, usually I'd spot drill differently for different applications. For driled holes I'd be spotting 50% of the drill diameter, for tapped holes 5% over the nominal thread size. That being said, I'd often work with models without the thread size specified in the model, just modeled as a blank hole more often than I'd have it as a threaded hole in the model. I'd also do odd things like roll tapping, using oversized holes in difficult materials, thread milling with a convenient drill size rather than the core diameter to make sure I get full thread form, in these cases how would the spot drill calculate how big the chamfer should be? I'd suggest that it would default to matching the chamfer on the hole, in the model, like when I select the chamfer at the top of a hole as the drilling geometry, if a plain hole is selected it should default to 50% of the hole diameter, which you can adjust to suit as a percentage of hole diameter? Drilling wizards seem to be such a simple thing, but the easiest to get horribly wrong. I can imagine trusting a drilling wizard with drilling and tapping 50 holes on a part, having my tap defined as an end mill type shape as I usually do (can't seem to define a tap as a drill shape in inventor hsm, maybe it should be a modelled form tool instead for me at the minute) and either getting not enough thread depth, or jamming the tap right to the bottom of a hole, and breaking it. I like having alllot of controlling over this, a broken tap takes time to drill out with an old carbide end mill, and roll tapping you have no chance whatsoever of getting that out! As a result I'm a bit ocd about drilling, tapping, reaming, boring, those sorts of things. Another thing I always wondered, is it nessessary to have tapping, right tapping, left tapping, and tapping with chip breaking? Could these be amalgamated into just tapping, and peck tapping (chip breaking), or even better just into tapping with more options like a check box for chip breaking? I know this would be a nightmare to implement as the posts have these defined as cycles inside them, but my tapping, and right tapping cycle are both identical in my posts.
