Add tangential extensions in turning

Add tangential extensions in turning

Add tangential extensions in turning.  There are many times I am dealing with diameters or faces that will have stock left on them after turning. Sometimes it may be grind stock or maybe just semi-finish the turning then do milling and them back to lathe.  With out tangential extensions it becomes difficult to extend the tool path to include the extra stock with out creating an extra sketch.

Add tangential extensions in turning.

Pretty Simple... Pretty handy... Pretty confusing why its not there already.

My thoughts exactly

Maybe move this to the Inventor HSM and HSMWorks CAM Ideastation so it can get the votes it deserves.(Info for any moderator, don't make a new one anybody because that would mean the kudos get lost.)

I agree.

I ran into a part where I needed it and it wasn't available.

@Lonnie.Cady added the UI tag - this would most likely be handled in the chaining.  We would pass a chain the to kernel that had already been extended.

@al.whatmough thanks, I am not too sure where things like that occur and took WAG at it.

 I also added the "Turning" and "Selections" tags.

this shoudl help us start to filter ideas.

Guys, full disclosure - when I merged the two ideas I missed the check to merge Kudos.

We are aware that this is a top request.

Can I vote twice for this one?

@scottmoyse  no need - that just shows an lack of faith in our ability to pick the correct ideas to prioritize.

I should re-iterate.  we do not pick ideas on votes alone.   Votes are simply a way of raising ideas to the top of the list.

The true power of IDEAS is it gives a way to engage with the community on development before code is written or while code is being written.

 @al.whatmough
I understand some value in the IdeaStation. But the community engaging in idea's before development was also the case before we had an Ideastation. And during the code being written I still find it wrong that it's being posted in the Idea it's self since that blurs the lines between forum and idea's even more, but that just me. So if you aks me the main difference between before and now is the votes, and therefor we would automatically expect them to have a major impact(Because if not, why go through the hassle of making the IdeaStation).

@Laurens-3DTechDraw the reality of the idea station is that is gives users the "feeling" of being listened, it does not dictate what will be worked or in which order things will be done.  The total impact of the idea station on actual development is actually probably very small.  The only real value is that is separates ideas from product questions.

@al.whatmough the product has went years with out tangential extension, improper functioning leadin/leadout, being able to rapid retract a part off operation etc...  yet alternate flank threading was added, the no drag turning etc....  none of which I saw asked for or posted in the forum.  So more complex turning solutions are added while the basics are not fixed.  I would say some lack of faith on priorities is justified by @scottmoyse.

@Lonnie.Cady

Both of those options were asked for by me on the forum actually. But I still get your point.

@Laurens-3DTechDraw that is exactly my point, I don't remember a big discussion and many people saying they wanted those features, not that they are not good to have.  Just proof that most peoples votes have very little impact on the development of the software.

@Laurens-3DTechDraw

So while I am happy for you that your ideas are taken seriously it troubles me that more complex things are getting done and simple things cannot be added or fixed

I can remember a discussion about part off, you wanted to have a reduced feedrate at a diameter, I suggested that we also allow parts catcher activation at a diameter to prevent chip build up on the catcher on large diameter part offs, fix the retract and add ability to chamfer with part off tool.  We got the reduced feed and that was it.   Again more proof that very few have an impact on development.  So while I know you have the best interest of the software in mind and also would like to see things advance, you should feel grateful that you are one who's suggestions are taken seriously  and obviously well respected by development.

@Lonnie.Cady , I think this conversation headed off in a bad direction.  The point I was making was we do not want users voting multiple time to try and make the ideas they want show up with more votes and that this idea is clearly at the top of the list for turning anyway.

As @Laurens-3DTechDraw points, both the ideas that where mentioned as "not being asked for" where asked for on the forum.  However, to your point, something like an idea station would help prioritize work.  That is where I get nervous when @scottmoyse says "can I vote twice".  As soon as you have users voting multiple times or rallying people around ideas to get multiple votes you loose the honest value of a community as a whole showing what is more important to them.

Speaking honestly and specially about this idea, it has been in the backlog and got rolled into a much bigger plan that over complicated a simple request.

In summary, my point it two fold.

1) This idea is at the top of the list.  So, please lets not start tactics that take away the value of votes

2) Some amount of review needs to go into each idea to align it with current work and verify that this is best for the community as a whole.  AS I mentioned in an earlier comment.  Comments on an idea help with that.

@al.whatmough I was not suggesting we vote multiple times, but I think it can be concluded that @scottmoyse said that in jest to simply imply how important it was to him.  I will stand by my belief that I have a right to be skeptical of the priorities of HSMWorks development.

Feel free  to delete any of my post that you feel detract from this.

@Lonnie.Cady no need to delete any comments.  You are more then welcome to maintain for skepticism.

While we have progress through the list of things we know we need to do for turning, we have many more things on the list still.

Some things that we thought would be fast, where not.

@al.whatmough

" it has been in the backlog"

"got rolled into a much bigger plan"

"This idea is at the top of the list"

So what is the criteria to mark them as accepted?

That's a very good point Lonnie. And I did only suggest voting twice to accentuate my desire to see this simply effective enhancement. I see where Al is coming from to a certain extent . And Laurens raised some excellent points about the role of the ideastation in his last comment.
