Unable to open file after converting a "3D" dwg file to Fusion model

Anonymous

I am trying to "create Fusion design" from a DWG file that contains 3D geometry (so I want this file to convert to a model, not a drawing).  I have done this before and its worked. But, today I am unable to open the file after the "create Fusion design" step.  When I go to open the converted Fusion model, I receive the error message below.  Following the steps on the troubleshooting link does not seem to help this scenario.

Your help and feedback is much appreciated!

Hi @Anonymous,

thank you for posting! We have had some reports from users pushing BRD (board) designs from EAGLE to Fusion 360 who ran into this behaviour. I have the following questions:

  • Is this the case with your design as well?
  • Could you attach your log files for us to investigate?
  • Could you attach the original design for us to investigate?

Thank you in advance!

I don't believe it is the same case - as my design is coming from an AutoCAD file, not Eagle - but I read some of those reports and it does sounds similar. Attached are my log files. Thanks!

Hi @Anonymous,

thanks for the reply. Would you be able to remove the converted file that wouldn't open and once again import the original 3D file into Fusion 360?

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, it still does not work. I did notice an interesting work-around, though, see below:

If I upload the .DWG file to my A360 hub via an internet browser (I use chrome), then open Fusion, then click the "Convert Fusion Design", the converted file will show the "unable to open" error message - as I have previously described.

However, if I open Fusion first, then upload the .DWG file directly from there, it will convert the file during this upload and I can open this converted file without issue.

I am able to use that work-around for now but would prefer the alternative to work as it previously did. It is technically my manufacturer uploading the .dwg to the hub (and he does not have Fusion360) and then I am converting the file to Fusion for my part of the project.

Hi @Anonymous,

thanks a lot for the reply and for sharing the workaround! I am reporting this to the development team as well - this issue seems related to the one for EAGLE reported by other users and we will be working on a fix.

Thanks you!

Hi @Anonymous,

thanks once again for reporting this. Would you be able to try importing the affected CAD data once again and let me know if this works?

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Anonymous,

thanks for the reply. I believe this might be linked to another issue in this case. Would you be able to attach the following to your post (by using the BROWSE FILES TO ATTACH button):

  • the DWG file you are uploading to Fusion 360
  • your Fusion 360 Diagnostic Log Files (Question mark in the top right corner of the Fusion 360 interface -> Support and Diagnostics -> Diagnostic Log Files) -> they haven't been attached previously for some reason.

Thank you in advance!

I’m sorry, but I am unable to give you one of the DWG files due to product privacy but attached the log files.  However, I was working with my manufacturer this morning to get a “dummy” model that shows the same problem so that I could share it with you and I am no longer seeing this issue on any files we exchange today.

If I go back to the original files I saw the issue on, I still get the error message.  But, if either of us uploads those same files again to the A360 hub, we no longer get the error message.

So I guess the problem is solved?  It appears that the issue won’t happen again, although I am not sure what changed in our process.

Thanks.

Hi @Anonymous,

thanks for the confirmation! This behaviour was caused by a translation issue our developers managed to fix last night. Due to this issue, the models you uploaded previously are not compatible with the current version of Fusion 360 and produce the "Unable to open" error. To avoid confusion, you may remove them.

Thank you for your understanding and for reporting this!

Please accept as solution if my post resolves your issue, or reply with additional details if the problem persists.
