Orbit locking problem

I have installed Fusion on a new Mac Mini running Ventura under Rosseta2. Unfortunately, when I try to orbit a model Fusion regularly locks in Orbit mode and won't let me deselect the Orbit tool. Nothing I do seems to deselect it and the only way I can continue is to completely close Fusion and reopen it again.

Is anyone else having a similar problem?

Are you using trackpad?

Hi Phil,

No. I am using a Logi Ergo M575 track ball.

Thanks for responding. I'm a long time M570 user.

Have you charged/changed the batteries in your mouse, or tried another mouse just to eliminate the hardware involved?

Hi Phil

I have now changed the battery in the M575 and it still does the same thing. The battery was reading 1.3v on the multi meter so it still had a lot of charge left but I changed it anyway to be safe. I didn't expect this to solve anything as I only get the problem with Fusion360. All other applications seem to be running properly.

Next I tried using the Apple Magic Mouse. It seemed to work OK for a while which made me think the problem might have been the M575 BUT even the Apple mouse has just started doing the lock in orbit thing. This would see to rule out the problem as been hardware and confirm that it is a Fusion bug of some sort.

Thanks for replying with details. Now we have to figure out what is different between your experience and many thousands of other mac users who aren't reporting this.

Hi Phil

I have been doing quite a bit of digging to try and figure this out. I found a few threads on the subject including this one:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-design-validate/can-t-escape-orbit/td-p/5130980

It appears that it has been an ongoing issue for some users for many years. I will try and test some of their observations and see if I can find out exactly what circumstances trigger it.

I am a Windows 10 user and have seen this behavior (on rare occasions).

I cannot reproduce the behavior on demand.

As noted by @alanQG9SC it has been reported in these Forums many times over the years.

For everyone experiencing this behavior:

Do you orbit:

  • Using the view cube (by dragging it).
  • Or by using hotkeys (shift + MMB)
  • Or by using the orbit command icon in the navigation bar (lower center of application)
  • What is your "pan zoom orbit" preference?
  • Do you use a regular mouse or trackpad?

These steps reliably recreate the issue:

  1. Launch Fusion 360
  2. Activate the orbit feature via the mouse button
  3. Before releasing the mouse button, drag the mouse cursor over the browser tree
  4. Release the mouse button
  5. Result: Orbit feature is still active

This step reliably stops the issue:

1. Place mouse pointer on view cube

2. Drag the view cube towards the center of the screen.

Hi Phil

I have been experiencing the lock issue all afternoon and paying particular attention to the point you mentioned.

In my case it appears the clicking the View Cube and orbiting creates the issue when the cursor is moved over the Browser Tree as you described. This happens when moving left and onto the tree or by moving too far to the right of the screen (ie out of the work space) which then loops the cursor back round onto the workspace at the browser tree again.

You suggestions for resolving the issue worked for me.

It also happens when using the SHIFT+ CMD + Middle Mouse click meted and dragging over the browser tree. However, in this case the behaviour is fixed simply by rechecking the middle mouse button.

@alanQG9SC Thanks for more details. I can also repeat the issue as you describe. This is plenty to push for a fix, however it could take a while to get this into development. Thanks for helping diagnose it and find the repeating steps.
