Insert into Current Design not linked to original external component file

Anonymous
Not applicable

Haven't used Fusion360 in a couple months...  now when I use "Insert into Current Design" the inserted component is not linked to the original external component file.  It used to work as expected (defaulted to being linked, requiring manual break if desired).  Is there some new setting/option/preference I'm missing?

Thanks!

no, nothing has changed in that area for a long time.  Most likely, what is happening is that you are inserting a component from another project into your design, and, you are still using a Personal Hub (likely, if you've had Fusion for a while).  What is supposed to happen is you get this dialog:

personal hub x project insert.png

if, sometime in the past, you clicked "don't show me this again", you won't see this dialog, and the design will come in unlinked.

Is the design from a different project?

Will inserted components only be linked if they live in the same project?

Both designs are brand new.  The component I'm inserting is from a different project (a "Materials - Parts" project).

I don't recall ever seeing that popup in the past (and definitely not in either of these projects).  And I don't think I would have selected "Don't show me again", but if I had...  how would I revert to default behavior?

How can I tell if I'm on a Personal Hub?

Thanks!

thanks, @Anonymous .  This is the second question we've gotten in a couple of weeks.  Could be something going on, hard to say.  Anyway, if you are willing to try an experiment for me, can you do this?  Open the preferences dialog, and reset to defaults:

reset preferences default.png

Then, try your insert again.  One warning, though.  This will reset ALL your preferences.  Sorry about that, but there is no way to reset just the dialogs...  Let me know if that shows the dialog again.  If not, I may have to ask for more info - maybe a video or something to help us figure it out.

That worked...  and my keyboard shortcuts weren't overwritten!  🙂  Not sure how/when it escaped me that you can't link to components outside of the current project.

Thanks for your help and quick responses!

great, glad to hear it, @Anonymous .  I realized I never did answer your question "How can I tell if I'm on a Personal Hub?".  I'm not sure if this is the only way, but if you go to this dropdown (under your name in the upper left):

Screen Shot 2020-04-03 at 8.05.01 PM.png

And, at the bottom, under "SINGLE-USER STORAGE", if your account is listed there, and has the checkmark (meaning: active), then you have a personal hub.  Eventually, you'll have to move to a Team Hub (but don't worry, it is painless, and no real difference in experience).  This will allow cross-project inserts of Designs into other Designs, as a bonus

Just an update for the record:  My shortcut keys DID get overwritten when restoring defaults...  must have just not taken effect until restart.  Oh, well.
