I want to love derive

But I can't.

 

I love when I update one radius on a fillet and it completely breaks the entire fixture plate the derived part is sitting on.

When updating the derived component I have to cross my fingers and hope it doesn't destroy something.

 

What is the correct way to use derive? Seems like if I do anything that has dependency on the derived part it breaks on an update. For example: It seems like I shouldn't extrude something using anything referenced off the derived part. If its referenced and the derived part decides to move on update it destroys that extrusion.
