Fail to initialise after install (MAC)

Dear Community,

I am experiencing significant issues with Autodesk Fusion on my MacBook Pro (M1, 8 GB RAM) running macOS 14.6.1. Below, I have detailed the problems I'm encountering along with the troubleshooting steps I have already taken to try and resolve the issue.

Issue Description:

  1. Installation and Launch Problems:

    • I successfully installed Fusion 360, but when attempting to launch the application, it becomes " Not Responding"  while the initialising progress bar is midway and fails to fully load.
    • During the installation process, there were multiple warnings and errors related to file permissions and the inability to extract or remove certain files which where solved using Terminal commands. It is now correctly installed.
  2. Excessive Memory Usage:

    • Upon launching Fusion 360, the application quickly consumes an enormous amount of memory (upwards of 40 GB), which far exceeds the available physical RAM on my system. This leads to a "Your system has run out of application memory" warning, forcing me to quit applications, including Fusion 360, to free up resources.
    • This also even happend when running the "GATHER SYSTEM INFO" from Fusion´s Service Utility menu, and thus cannot create a zip file with all documents due to crashing.
  3. System Performance Degradation:

    • The application’s behavior causes the entire system to slow down, and Fusion 360 appears as "Not Responding" in Activity Monitor. Even when other applications are closed to free up memory, Fusion 360 still fails to launch properly.

Steps Taken to Troubleshoot:

  1. Reinstallation:

    • I have uninstalled and reinstalled Fusion 360 multiple times, ensuring that I remove all associated files and caches before reinstalling.
  2. Permissions and Ownership:

    • I verified and corrected the permissions on the directories involved using chmod and chown commands to ensure that my user account has full access to the necessary files.
  3. Running with Rosetta:

    • I made sure to enable the "Open using Rosetta" option to ensure compatibility with my M1 Mac.
  4. Safe Mode Launch:

    • I attempted to launch Fusion 360 in macOS Safe Mode to eliminate potential conflicts from third-party applications and services, but the problem persisted.
  5. Console Logs and Activity Monitor:

    • I monitored the Console logs during the launch attempts and noticed the following recurring message: Ignoring memory limit update because this process is not memory-managed.
    • Activity Monitor consistently shows excessive memory usage by Fusion 360, which leads to the system running out of available memory.
  6. System Updates and Rosetta 2:

    • My macOS and Rosetta 2 are fully updated to the latest versions available. I also ensured that the system is not under heavy load from other processes when attempting to launch Fusion 360.

Request for Assistance:

Given the steps I have already taken, I am still unable to get Fusion 360 to run properly on my Mac. The excessive memory usage and the application's inability to launch are major roadblocks for me.

I would appreciate any guidance or solutions you can offer, such as potential patches, configurations, or advanced troubleshooting steps that might resolve these issues. If this is a known issue with M1 Macs or macOS 14.6.1, please let me know if there are any specific updates or workarounds I should be aware of.

Thank you for your support.

All Logs and a few screenshots have been attached.

Best regards,
Ger.

Unfortunately there was no success. Still getting the "2024-08-19 20:51:11.105901 fatal: Exception caught in main: File name too long system:63".

Please see attached logs.

Standing by for more input!

Thanks.

@Aitilis Errr. I thought that would do it. Let me get back to the drawing board. We now know that this is what is causing he problem. Just need to figure out why and how to work around this.

Stand by as i changed the Username via MAC Settings, but i just noticed the Hiome directory still has the previous long name. Let me see if i can do something about it as i dont want to mess up the whole computer by changing the root user directory: Any references to the old home directory in applications or configurations may need to be updated manually and thats a No-Go at this moment.

If you can share more info on this thoughs you are more than welcome.

Thanks.

Ger.

Thanks,

I do understand this process and its quite risky on a fully operational computer with plenty of apps, files and configs.

When you change your username and home directory:

  • Application Preferences: Many applications store their settings, preferences, and data in files within your home directory. These files often include absolute paths that point to specific locations. If the path changes, the application may not be able to find these files, leading to lost settings or even malfunctioning apps.
  • Configuration Files: Certain system and application configuration files may contain references to the old home directory path. These might include scripts, cron jobs, environment variables, and more.
  • Keychains and Passwords: Keychain items might be tied to the old username, and changing the username could cause issues with accessing stored passwords or certificates.

So its a big deal as you can see... Im not certain of being able to follow this path as the risks are vast as you may understand.

Minimizing the impact is key here and there is probably an alternative workaround it without having to modify the home directory name.

Thanks.

Ger.

@Aitilis Completely understand. I am going to chase some workarounds to see if there are any. Will post back here.

Good evening.

I am SUPER grateful to you both for all the troubleshooting and detail put into this search especially germananavarro for logging all of these reports and such.

I am having the same issue with my son's computer.  While I have not done all that Ger has, just this evening I erased and reset this computer, with no success on the initialization of Fusion.  I just changed my son's Mac user name by creating a new user, as the link from Raj suggested, to make it significantly shorter.  It is now a 5 letter word followed by a 3 letter word.  No special characters, just caps and lowercase letter.  I then reinstalled Fusion and, unfortunately, I am still having the same issue.  My activity monitor was showing roughly 30%-40% cpu usage during install but didn't seem to show much activity at all upon launch of the application.  Shortly after it showed as not responding.

At this point I noticed that there was another process  called "family" on the activity monitor that was showing not responding.  it was associated with the secondary user that I had created to change my son's name.  I force quit the process called "family" and tried fusion again.  It has now been maybe 5 minutes.  The Fusion window does not seem to be changing, but the spinning beach ball is also not showing.  In the activity monitor is very slowly logging cpu time, but is not showing "not responding."  In the time the activity monitor has logged cpu time from about 25-38.26, fusion has logged 2.19 in cpu time.

I certainly do not have the skills to log every detail the way Ger, has, I hope this is somewhat helpful info.

**UPDATE**

It has now been about Activity Monitor cpu time is now at 48 while Fusion cpu time is at 3.  The cpu % for Fusion has not gone below 0.1 nor above 0.5.

@Aitilis Based on feedback we are working on a fix that will shorten the path I we do see a longer username. However, we are not sure yet on when this fix will be available. Unfortunately this means that for your current situation , creating a new user account with a shorter user name is the only available workaround. I know that is not ideal for you but that is what we have got at this time. I will certainly keep you posted on when we will have a potential alternative available.

@jakob_monter Lets start from scratch and collect some information. It may not be even the same issue in this case.

1. Close Fusion and make sure that it is not running in activity monitor
2. Restart your machine
3. Now launch Fusion - it will likely hit this problem
4. Close Fusion
5. Go to launchpad - run the Fusion service uitlity
6. Gather system info
7. Attach the Fusiondiagnosticslogs.zip file

Also, in activity monitor, if you click on Fusion you will get an option of "sample" . Run the sample and please attach them here as well.

(Are you running in multiple monitors?)

I need to know if there is an update to this.  I find it strange that Fusion would depend on the length of my username.  I am currently struggling to get Fusion to install correctly on my Mac.  Any assistance on resolving the issue would be very great full.

Hi, i tried a few days ago to reinstall Fusion and now it finally works. Cant say much, other than i finally managed to install this on my User.

IF you followed my thread, i changed the "Long_User" with a "Short_User" (Simply modified my Long user name for a shorter one, did not create a new account), but as system files still remained with "Long_User" it did not work.

For some reason, it worked a few days ago.
