Fail to initialise after install (MAC)

Dear Community,

I am experiencing significant issues with Autodesk Fusion on my MacBook Pro (M1, 8 GB RAM) running macOS 14.6.1. Below, I have detailed the problems I'm encountering along with the troubleshooting steps I have already taken to try and resolve the issue.

Issue Description:

  1. Installation and Launch Problems:

    • I successfully installed Fusion 360, but when attempting to launch the application, it becomes " Not Responding"  while the initialising progress bar is midway and fails to fully load.
    • During the installation process, there were multiple warnings and errors related to file permissions and the inability to extract or remove certain files which where solved using Terminal commands. It is now correctly installed.
  2. Excessive Memory Usage:

    • Upon launching Fusion 360, the application quickly consumes an enormous amount of memory (upwards of 40 GB), which far exceeds the available physical RAM on my system. This leads to a "Your system has run out of application memory" warning, forcing me to quit applications, including Fusion 360, to free up resources.
    • This also even happend when running the "GATHER SYSTEM INFO" from Fusion´s Service Utility menu, and thus cannot create a zip file with all documents due to crashing.
  3. System Performance Degradation:

    • The application’s behavior causes the entire system to slow down, and Fusion 360 appears as "Not Responding" in Activity Monitor. Even when other applications are closed to free up memory, Fusion 360 still fails to launch properly.

Steps Taken to Troubleshoot:

  1. Reinstallation:

    • I have uninstalled and reinstalled Fusion 360 multiple times, ensuring that I remove all associated files and caches before reinstalling.
  2. Permissions and Ownership:

    • I verified and corrected the permissions on the directories involved using chmod and chown commands to ensure that my user account has full access to the necessary files.
  3. Running with Rosetta:

    • I made sure to enable the "Open using Rosetta" option to ensure compatibility with my M1 Mac.
  4. Safe Mode Launch:

    • I attempted to launch Fusion 360 in macOS Safe Mode to eliminate potential conflicts from third-party applications and services, but the problem persisted.
  5. Console Logs and Activity Monitor:

    • I monitored the Console logs during the launch attempts and noticed the following recurring message: Ignoring memory limit update because this process is not memory-managed.
    • Activity Monitor consistently shows excessive memory usage by Fusion 360, which leads to the system running out of available memory.
  6. System Updates and Rosetta 2:

    • My macOS and Rosetta 2 are fully updated to the latest versions available. I also ensured that the system is not under heavy load from other processes when attempting to launch Fusion 360.

Request for Assistance:

Given the steps I have already taken, I am still unable to get Fusion 360 to run properly on my Mac. The excessive memory usage and the application's inability to launch are major roadblocks for me.

I would appreciate any guidance or solutions you can offer, such as potential patches, configurations, or advanced troubleshooting steps that might resolve these issues. If this is a known issue with M1 Macs or macOS 14.6.1, please let me know if there are any specific updates or workarounds I should be aware of.

Thank you for your support.

All Logs and a few screenshots have been attached.

Best regards,
Ger.

@Aitilis Its definitely something in that folder area and have to do with materials. Here is one more test to get us closer.

Can you copy the common folder from the other user and paste it to the original user. Is that helping to open Fusion?
Remember once you delete this folder or copy new things into this folder, make sure that Fusion is not running in the background before doing this copy paste.

That folder generally is in the 20 MB range.

Thanks for keeping on top of this. Really appreciate your time and efforts.

"Common" filed copied, then reboot the computer, then Launch the app with the following result.

NO SUCCES: Same results as before: Hangs up mid way of initializing + infinite spinning wheel + Not Responding on Activity Monitor.

As a side note you mentioned this folder should weight around 20MB, actually the one i copied in weights 172MB, dont really know if this is of any relevance.

Here is a link to my Common folder on Google Drive.

Standing by for further ideas.

Thanks again.

Sorry, just to clarify my previous message:
The previously attached file is the "Common" folder of the working NEW user.

If you want to have a look at the Non-Working Backed up "Common" folder content feel free to grab it from this Google Drive link.

@Aitilis Couple of other clarifications (btw thanks for providing all the files while we try to figure this one out).

1. Can you check that you are not running using rosetta
2. If I remember right the Materials folder read a date of like May 2024. When I asked you to delete Autodesk folder, it should have also taken care of the common folder. Just to confirm that in message 8 when I was asking to delete the Autodesk folder I assume this common folder should have been deleted as well.

Meanwhile I am also waiting for our materials engineering team to come online before finding out more information rom the logs.

Thanks Rajkumar,

1. Yes, i can confirm im starting up the app without Rosetta. The Rosetta selection box from "Get Info" is NOT selected.

2. Its quite strange what you mention about the date (May 2024) reason being is, that i just installed the app for the first time in this computer a couple of days ago so all dates (Install, created, last opened) should reflect Agugust and not May. Strange...

And yes, i did erase the the app running the uninstaller and then erasing the Autodesk folder completely, then flushing the BIN.

Thanks again for your efforts!

@Aitilis I am still waiting for one of our engineers to look at other options on where this is going wrong. Materials is certainly one direction. While they look more into this, here are a couple o other thing that will help. It's good we isolated this to this user environment.

1. Log into https://login.autodesk360.com/login
2. Go to a design and select Open in desktop
3. This should trigger the desktop launch - Is the Fusion getting stuck at this point?

1. Disconnect Internet on this machine
2. Launch Fusion (does it cross the huge state ?)

Again the above tests are to further isolate where the problem is happening.

I am going to be looking into a ew other places once you have this done.

Thnaks Rajkumar,

Jsut before proceeding with this test. Should i replace the Common folder with the original one (the one i previously backed up) or just use the imported one from the new user account.

I have a Personal account, not really sure if i will be able  or have the option to "launch on desktop" with a Personal account.

Thanks.

@Aitilis The common folder can be the one that you copied over and open in desktop should be available irrespective of license type.

Thanks Rajkumar,

Unfortunately the "Open in desktop" option is greyed out on my side so im unable to click the button. Please refer to attached pics.

Also tried launching the app from launchpad icon without internet and it replicates the same issue, nothing changes.

Standing by for more input.

Thanks.

@Aitilis Thank you for patiently working with us here while we try to figure this out. There is a lot of information that you have passed on that we are exploring to see what is happening here. With the the data that you have provided the data shows that a simple restart of Fusion should fix it but obviously not :). So it is taking a bit of time.

Here is one another information that is going to help.

1. Close as many applications on your machine as possible (to the point where when we launch Fusion that is pretty much the only application that is running)

2. Please start recoding activity nominator - sort it by CPU%

3. Now launch Fusion/

4.. Keep recording the activity monitor for a few seconds until Fusion hits the point where it hangs.

We want to see what are all the back ground process that gets launched during this time. The sample you showed clearly says that it has to do with Materials/ physics library but clearing that folder is not helping us. So need to figure out why.

@Aitilis Our engineering team is also requesting another log file from a different location. So lets do this:

If you still have the copy of the common folder from the original user can you attach it here please? There is a adexmthv**.log file that we are interested in.

@Aitilis I think we are getting close. This is what we see in one of the logs that you just shared.

[2024-08-19 20:51:11.104222] [info]: Active service: fcs2
[2024-08-19 20:51:11.105901] [fatal]: Exception caught in main: File name too long [system:63]

Does your user name contain any special characters or spaces etc?

@Aitilis I think we found where the issue is. I went to some older images you attached and looks like you have a very long macOS user name and this is what is interfering with launching the application as the filename path exceeds what macOS would allow.

My bet is that if you shorten the username Fusion launches immediately (likely that is the case when you created the new user name)

HI Rajkumar,

Just changed my username to a short "7-letter-word", restarted the computer and attemt relaunch but still fails in the same spot. No difference in behaviour.

Would it be worth fully erasing everything to the bone and reinstalling from scratch (Maybe though terminal commands)? If so, please let me know Terminal prompts to follow along and then ill just relaunch the installer; Otherwise ill just do a regular Unistall via Launchpad + erase Autodesk folder from Application Support afterwards.

Thanks.

Ger.

@Aitilis Lets try this with the shorter user name.

1. Close Fusion (restart Mac - not sure if this is needed but it will eliminate any what IFs)
2. Go to Launchpad - Uninstall Fusion
3. Go to  ~/Library/Application Support/
4. Delete Autodesk folder
5. If you have any shortcuts to launch Fusion delete
6. Install Fusion again

I certainly think this time around it should be a successful launch.

IF and IF it fails, lets get logs again from the common folder and see what is happens.

Thanks,

Unfortunately there was no success. Still getting the "[2024-08-19 20:51:11.105901] [fatal]: Exception caught in main: File name too long [system:63]".

Please see attached logs.

Standing by for more input!
