For giggles I've made a model of a speedometer face. To avoid the pesky no-emboss on double curved surfaces issue, I simply extruded my features (numbers/ticks) directly into the face of the speedo dish. This also avoids creating a bazillion little bodies. I then cut those towers down to very near the surface with an offset sketch profile used either revolved as a cut, or as a new body that then was used as a tool to cut. I also tried creating an offset face-splitting tool (surface) as well, but it errored any which way I tried to create a split tool.
The problem if two-fold and I wonder if one represents a bug.
1. Faces end up missing on parts of some of the numbers (not always the same depending on how high above the surface I cut the towers away.)
And
2. (Fixed in the uploaded version) if I cut TOO close to the surface - like 0.1mm to 0.28mm or so, I can't seem to select all of my tick and numeral faces to color (yellow). The current offset is like at 0.32mm (a little higher for lettering than I'd like - but I was able to add yellow paint appearance to faces then.)
There are a few tiny errors in the the timeline items as it's an export from a larger project, but I exported it to improve speed of processing as I worked on this one component.
This is all probably good enough for hobby work, but it still bugs me... maybe its a bug?
