Combine feature not allowing target body selection

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi all,

I am attempting to create a cut of my existing model into a larger box to be used for CFD as a fluid volume.

When attempting to select the target body it will not allow me to select anything - however, the tool body selection is working fine.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated - I'm still fairly new to this so I'm sure it's something I've missed.

Thanks,

Sam

Is the body you're trying to select part of an inserted linked design\component. Can you get a screen capture and use the photo option to embed in your next post.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I've attached a clip to try and show my problem. I am trying to cut out of the translucent box using the profile of the ones I have selected - this will be the fluid in my simulation and therefore cannot be overlapping with the solid components.

Am I misunderstanding the use of this tool or is there an alternative I could use instead.

Thanks again,

Sam

You can not use a linked component as the target as that would mean you're trying to join\cut an external design. One way around this is use Boundary Fill or insert the parts using Insert Derive.

As long a Boundary Fill is set to New Component or New Body  you can select all your inserted bodies then select the cells you need. This can be tricky and does fail sometimes.

With Insert Derive you you'll need to recreate the design and use Insert Derive from the insert menu to grab the components you need from the other designs.

The other option is break all the links in the design you have but then any edits the the external designs will not update.

Hi,

Combine needs a solid!

Thank you Anderson. I have never before used the surface side of Fusion 360 but thank you for your help.

Hi,

You may have received the part as a surface body or a surface element may have been deleted by mistake, turning the solid into a surface arrangement.

I have the same problem.  I made a new component rectangular cube and wanted to cut one edge to 20°.

I created a sketch triangle and told it to do an extruded cut.  IT WILL NOT SELECT THE RECTANGULER CUBE AND I CAN FIND NO WAY TO SELECT THE CUBE!  This is relatively simple to do in other CAD programs.  How do I select the "Object to Cut"?

I would have attached my file, but I don't know how to drag from the Fusion 360 cloud folders to my browser.  I prefer not to keep my files in the cloud, so this may be due to me having no other experience using cloud storage.

Excuse my rift, but I am finding this program quite difficult to learn.  It is no where near as intuitive as IronCAD!  I even think that it is more difficult to use than Solidworks.  IronCAD is my preferred program, but I have many years experience working with both IronCAD and Solidworks.

I bought a Fusion360 subscription to be able to do CAM.  It works great with STEP214 files from IronCAD.

I felt that I should at least learn how to make simple items in Fusion360.  I have wasted an inordinate amount of time trying to learn how to use this program!  I don't know if it is because other programs have patent protection around certain procedures, but I just don't find Fusion360 to be very intuitive.  It seems that once I finally do learn how to design something in Fusion360, it takes me two or three as many actions than are required in IronCAD.  I don't think that program familiarity is the main reason for this.

Use Modify > Draft,  select the base, the face to modify, and set it to 20 degrees.

Extrude > Cut, draw the closed triangle, profile must be planar, and shaded,

Set distance to cut with blue arrow handle.  Fusion will see what to cut if set up correctly.

Might help….

1. open your design

2. Rightclick „my new design“

3. Export > save as f3d > select local drive

4. attach the file to post
