Circular pattern of components breaks rigid groups and grounding

3 Assemblies here, A (front), B(center) and C (rear)

 

A and C have some circular patterned components because I'm lazy and didn't want to make joints that were the exact same 8 times for 40 components. Rigid groups were made in each assembly.

 

Master assembly has assembly B inserted and grounded. The grounding holds as it should. Once Assemblies A and C are added to the master assembly, the grounding of assembly B no longer holds. Additionally the rigid groups of A and C are still rigid when dragged, but not when translation moved.

 

It doesn't appear to matter if I break the link to the original assemblies or not.

Hi @araugh,

 

Thanks for posting! I think I understand what is happening here. It looks like you are trying to use the ground command like you would in other CAD packages. However, Fusion 360 uses "flexible subassemblies" (for lack of a better term). What I mean by this is if you have a design that looks like:

 

  • Root
  •      Subassembly
  •            Component 1
  •            Component 2

 

Grounding the subassembly only grounds things at that level, meaning that Components 1 and 2 are still free to move. In your example, there is nothing else at that level (but it is possible to have a body).

 

If you would like to make it so that components in a subassembly are not free to move, you must also ground those. More information on this topic can be found here (Thanks for the great explanation @jeff_strater!).
