Canvas imports with wrong aspect ratio

As title says, canvas import results in a completely wrong aspect ration witch also makes the function kind of useless.

Here I am trying to make a quick wall mount for my drills.

@tomsaubi I do understand those concerns and at some point in time had the same thoughts. However, I use a number of other CAD products and have found and reported bugs there as well.

Think I missed this the first time round. Seems to answer my question about other software having issues too. Seems to come with the CAD territory then. I'll try to stop being so hard on fusion! 👍

Simple fix, crop the photo into SQURE, where width and length are exactly the same.

import it, it will work.

I suspect fusion 360 has mixed up the X and Y.

and to be honest... fusion... this is a know problem for years.... fix it since you are now collecting millions from users all over the world, come on.

This is a known bug - remove the image metadata to fix it.

Even though this is an old thread, the tip to crop the photo on the iPhone works well!  Thank you!

@OceanHydroAU "known bug" or not, it's THIS thread that popped up for me when searching for the issue. Your work-around worked for me, thank you.

This bug is still occurring in 2025, it can still be fixed by slightly cropping the image before importing into Fusion.

This bug requires like 5 mins coding to fix, and it's still there 6 years after being reported. Bravo, Autodesk, bravo.

Btw the issue happens when you take picture with your phone vertically. I guess it's then marked in metadata that width and height have to be switched. Unblievable Autodesk didn't figure this out in 6 years.

Just wasted the better part of 40 minutes because of this bug. Can confirm that cropping the image first fixes it.

Workaround: Convert the JPG picture to a PNG and insert it in Canvas.

Please try with the above workaround.

Helo this bug is still occurring in 2026. Shame on you autodesk.

I try delete all data from picture, convert to .png and add picture to paint and save it still the same.

Attach image file that exhibits this behavior.

Hi,

The cause is an image from a source such as a smartphone that does not provide “format data.”
An easy remedy is to open the image in an image editing program and save it as a png or jpeg without editing it.

Any other programcan deal with images from phone just fine, and display them in correct orientation. So the necessary data is there. Only AUtodesk can't read it properly and instead of fixing it, lies about "not having format data"... If the data is not there, how come any other program displays it in correct orientation??

Can you Attach an image here that exhibits this behavior?

Sorry, but when autodesk people say "it's because the picture is from mobile", it shouldn't be so hard for the devs to actually take picture by mobile themselves? I just took a picture in portrait, all programs shows it as portrait, only F360 shows it as ladscape (=wider).

It's not about the 3 seconds. It's about it being imported wrongly. For YEARS. And instead o fixing it, you're telling customers to do workaround each time... Why can't it be imported correctly in the first place? Imagine window in your car can't open, so you go to the dealer to fix it. And he says - just open the whole door, see, 3 seconds....
