Stock changes do not persist through following setups

I'll try to be as specific as possible but bear with me as I am new to fusion360 (~100 hours of inefficient use).  Please pardon my list

 

  • I am attempting to cnc mill out a model that requires a two sided (top and bottom) operation.
  • Changes to the stock need to persist through each new setup as the stock changes due to facing operations
  • Its is a model of guitar 
  • I followed the instructions here: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/fusion-360/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How...
  • changes to the stock from setup 1 are not present , but I cannot select the corner of the resulting stock for origin, only its old wire frame profile
    • How do I know the resulting tool path will be correct?

Welcome to the community, hopefully we can get you sorted! First off, whenever possible, please supply the Fusion file. You can do that one of two ways;

1) File > Export > Save to local folder. Return to thread and attach the .f3d/.f3z file in your reply

2) If you have an educational or commercial account, you can right click on the file in the Data Panel and select "Share Public Link". Paste that link here (make sure it's set to "allow downloading"

Go to 

Setup/Stock and in the "mode" drop menu do you have "from preceding setup" checked?

 

Do you have "continue rest machining" checked (it's in the same window)?

Yes, I have both of those checked.  My question is unclear because I didn't see the stock update until after setup was complete.  However, the stock updating after the fact doesn't entirely help me, as I need to set the work coordinates relative to the new stock, not the old stock.  How do I do that?   I ASSUME that the resulting stock is now a mesh, and cannot be selected.  In that case the remedy would seem to be to create a model in anticipation of the previous steps?  No big deal if so...but not convenient.

 

The first stock is basically a rectangle that has a face operation on the top that makes it thinner.  The part is then flipped over, so now the origin needs to move to accommodate this change.  

 

I would upload a project file but I cannot share this project.  I've attached a picture showing the difference between the old stock, new stock, and the wireframe that F360 allows me to select.

I figured it out!  I saved the stock as a mesh from the last simulated setup.  I then imported it as a new body, then did a cross section sketch of the mesh from the create menu.  I used that to create a new sketch with the outline of the side I would like the WCS to be at.  Setup 2 was able to place the WCS on this sketch, and it matches precisely with the simulated stock from the previous setup.  Hope this helps someone else doing two sided machining.

How did you export the mesh from the last simulated setup?

I,m pretty sure I've done it in the past but can't figure it out.

Right click in the canvas when Simulation has completed. Select "Save Stock"

You can save the stock to your Fusion cloud, or export it to your computer.

From there, you can return to the Design workspace and "Insert Mesh". 

I've not done this in a while, but I think it's going to come in at 25.4 times the scale, so some editing will be required on your end.

^all you need to do is confirm the units upon inserting the mesh. Fusion puts the mesh in the exact same location as it was exported so you will see your model.
