More nesting tomfoolery

The first picture is what you would expect and indeed is a good arrangement, so it is shows the nesting utility can produce an efficient outcome.

Each second part rotated 180 to fit together well.

So why when you turn double sided off in the package manager do you get this monstrosity.

A handful of parts nested well together but the rest is shall we say a bit random.

Nice catch. The 'Double sided' flag in Process Material Library is coupled with the 'Pre-Kit' flag (Component Sources dialog; Shapes tab in Edit Nest dialog). The parameter that eventually controls this nesting behavior is this 'Pre-Kit' option.

There's a bit of history here: 'Pre-kit' used to be 'Flip' - this meant that double-sided parts can be flipped if it resulted in a higher efficiency. However, in the algorithm, it was actually treating it as a setting for kitting, and hence the new name. Long story short, it is something that needs to be cleaned up. I have created a ticket to make this setting more intuitive - TRUNFSN-2623.

Pre-Kit: Allow two instances of a part to be placed alongside each other at opposing angles as a “kit,” if it saves space. The kit is considered to be one part in the nest. A kit is not created if no space is saved.

1. Two instances are smaller than twice one, so space is saved.
2. Two instances are not smaller than twice one, so no space is saved. No kitting takes place.

Isn't this tab in edit nest, supposed to show option for bind, kit, rotation etc?

That's the Edit Nest Study UI, not the Edit Nest UI. You need to edit the Nest object directly to see the UI you're expecting.
