ID Grooving - Undercut "J-Hook / L-Hook" grooves.

Hello All,

 

      I have been using Fusion for quite some time and typically speaking, I am pretty well versed in the manufacture workspace and especially in turning. If I can't find a way to get the software to work for me, I generally find a workaround by creating extra or removing part geometries to compensate. But I am at a loss for these undercut grooves and I am seeing them come about more and more at my shop. Please, if anyone has ANY insight on how to target these areas and accomplish this it would be greatly appreciated!!!

@scullmfg you should be able to machine those grooves using an ID grooving tool in both groove roughing and finishing. when you set stock limits make sure you leave enough space for the tool to get into the groove without the back of the tool colliding with the back wall. if you create a sample file that doesn't work i can take a look.

Is this like a T-nut slot perpendicular to the inside of a bore? If I had to make this feature, I think I'd program it by hand... I'll be following this thread to see how to accomplish these features with fusions available turning/boring tools and toolpaths.

It doesn't run perpendicular to the bore, it runs concentric with the bore.

I can't even create a "non" working solution with a grooving strategy. It just gives me an error saying the toolpath is not supported for given tool and settings. I do have a file setup with both "test" tools designed and ready to impliment after rouging out the initial bore groove (just leaving the undercuts and a small amount on the axial faces to qualify the tools for cutting precision depths on the undercut grooves. How can I send this to you? Do I export in a certain format or something?

Thanks for sharing your file! I was afraid that was the geometry you were portraying in your first image, but it wasn't 100% clear to the casual observer. 
Sadly, this geometry is not yet possible. We're dealing with an undercut with an overhang in front of it, we don't have the tools needed to direct a safe approach and retract. Further; the one that's on the "reverse" side is not even possible (regardless of approach/retract/tool settings). I'll open a ticket today to see if we can improve the Groove strategies to better handle geometry such as this

Well, I really appreciate your help. That is really unfortunate though - I'm not sure why its not possible to do both geometries from one side. I use to do this frequently with other CAM suites. Sad (mostly because this is a very typical geometry for the market I service) but I will carry on doing it manually as that has been my solution for the past year or so. Thank you a TON for your time and assistance and hopefully Autodesk is able to address these geometries in the future.

I did open CAM-57223 to improve on the behavior of Face Grooving in Fusion. The issue that you're seeing are two fold:

1) There is an "overhang" that prevents the tool from machining the left side of the groove

2) The groove on the right side is inaccessible to any Fusion toolpath that we have, so that also needs to be addressed.
