How do you machine this ellipse spiral?

I have watched tutorials that show how to wrap a 2d adaptive path onto a cylinder using patches, but that only works with a single consistent diameter like a shaft.  I am trying to create a 4th axis path that spirals down to different diameters.  Also, the spiral has an ellipse profile.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi @Anonymous,

If the bottom of the spiral path doesn't have to be perfectly flat you can, for example, make a Surface Thicken offset of Half the diameter of your mill.

Then use Trace to select the edge of that surface.

At the moment compensation on Tracing isn't working.

I do need a flat bottom on the spiral.  Just using xyz would give me a cupped bottom surface.  I believe using 4 axis should give me the results I am looking for.  The photo shows what continuous cutting I am expecting in the Z and X as the rotary turns.

I haven’t try it yet but I know there are some 4th axis functions within the Beta environment in some operations on the Passes tab.
Idon’t know if a solution is there yet.

The WCS in your setup is missing the X-axis selection.

When you set the toolpath you have to give it a center of rotation or be able to set an offset for the center of rotation.

The wrap toolpaths need a round references, sometimes it will work with a nonround shape.

I am having ago to see if I can get a toolpath to stick, so far no dices.
