Engraving errors

Gday all

Have been Vcarving using ENGRAVE without any problems for 2 years, however since the last upgrade (sic) of Fusion and using existing previous sketches, the tool does not handle curved edges at all.    It goes to the correct depth but does not enter ( by raising the toolpath ) in any corner.    My sketches have a mixture of straight sided pockets  - straight sided and curved edges and curved edges pockets.

Have been using as a hobbyist but decided to purchased a month just to see if a full blown FUSION 360 would overcome the problem - NO.    Loaded Fusion 3 times - new computer and fusion loaded all to no avail.

Methinks there is a bug in the new version but someone might know a work around.

Would appreciate any help.

On another Fusion user's suggestion.

1. Save image as a DXF file.

2. Load that file into Lightburn Program.

3. Export that file as a DXF file.

4. Load that file into Fusion.

5. Go to MANUFACTURE and ENGRAVE as one normally does.

6. It worked without problems.

BUT trying that with a complicated image and Fusion falls over when DFXing out !!!!

tHE ONLY PROBLEM i HAVE IS THAT

Further research into this problem - ENGRAVE errors.

The problem only occurs when a vcarve enclosed entity has an arc or circle on one of the edges.   If I replace the arc or circle with a enclosed polygon the ENGRAVEing is correct.   So there lies the problem for AUTODESK to solve.

However, using polygons creates larger files which are very difficult to edit.

Happy research AD.

Yes, we are aware that the issue lies in Fusion and with arcs. We are working on a solution at the moment

Hello @seth.madore, I got the same error due to this version.
Is there any chance for me to rollback to last version or some preview version ?

Also, I got a file that has this problem and after a coreldraw conversion (probably coreldraw turned it into splines) it works fine. Do you think it would be good to have this files ? I can send you by some private way if you need them.

Also if needed feel free to ask me to test some preview version or anything needed. I have a good bit of experience in c++ programming so I know how hard this things are and can help debug or give a good feedback if needed.

Just let me know, thanks for your dedication.

Firstly I’m sure AUTODESK is working hard to solve this known problem and
they will release a fix soon.
Secondly I solved this problem with their advice by following the below fix.
1. Save your original files so that you can have unaltered files for when
the fix becomes available.
2. Using a copy of the original file export the file in DXF format.
3. Using a third party program ( I used LIGHTBURN ) import that DXF file
into (LIGHTBURN) then EXPORT the file back out in DFX format.
NOTE - LIGHTBURN converts all ARCs in to small straight lines ( it
linearised them - it did not lineraised complete circles so in the original
file I “broke” them by editing them by adding a small straight line into
the circle OR replacing then with inner POLYGONS.
4. Bring the LB DXF file back into Fusion with the OPEN file - save it -
then from here everything worked, a a good tool path was generated as per
normal.

NOTE - if The imported DXF file has a hell of a lot of elements and becomes
a bit harder to edit - that’s why I only modified copies of my original
files.

Hope this helps - hold your breath for Autodesk’s fix.

Regards

1) Sadly, a roll back is not possible.

2) Yes, this "workaround" (coreldraw conversion) is pretty much the only workaround at the moment. It converts arcs (which are the point of failure in Engrave) into splines

2 weeks isn't very urgent. Autodesk knows MANY businesses small and large rely on certain features. Maybe save the old versions of Fusion so if something goes wrong you have something to roll back to? I'm not sure what was added in the new patch but it's definitely more important to make sure the existing basic features are functional.  There's absolutely NO reason you can't roll back everyones versions to the last working version. This is actually completely unacceptable.

The window of opportunity for a rollback is very very small, we're talking a span of hours. After that, the chances substantially increase that users have data that will not open in an older version. I'm disappointed in the delay in getting this bug fixed, but it's a deep issue that involves a fair bit more than changing a few lines of code in the program.

I proposed a workaround in this post. Basically just create a plane at a small angle for your engraving, when this get projected to the XY plane by the engrave operation, all arc are converted to splines. There is a sample file in the link above. Note you also need to set the top height to your stock, not the default selected curves. I've tested with the plane set at 0.005° so distortion should be minimal. Set at 0.001° fails!

So when testing out the update, not a single person tried to create something with a curve in it? In the first couple hours of the update nobody mentioned you can't do anything that's not straight lines? And rollback isn't possible because files users make in the messed up version might not work in the old one? So wasting a day of work for people is more important than putting peoples entire businesses on hold for over 2 weeks? I'm sure most users making new files that may not work in the WORKING version probably can't work on them anyways because almost everything uses curves. This is ridiculous. It always blows my mind that companies make these big updates and don't even have someone try and use the update before they launch it. Oh well, I don't have time to type more, gotta contact customers and cancel more orders.

Don’t be so critical, not even you could test EVERY posimle feature of this
program - don’t worry they will correct any malfunction they know of.
Meanwhile there are work arounds to this problem.

Saludos cordiales.

I also have orders that are delayed going out. Workarounds are not an acceptable answer. This is not a game where a new feature is not working correctly. This is software that had a feature that worked, and I have used for years for my business, suddenly STOP working.

We as paying users have every right to be critical.

As a customer myself (I do run my own shop in addition to my services to Autodesk), I fully agree. That said, "flies with honey" has a certain value in instances like this. We are working on a fix and hope to have this out to customers as soon as possible.

I hope existing features that people are paying for and relying on will hold priority over rolling out new features in the future. Client trust is huge on securing future subscriptions. I don't think people having access to the basic program and features they are paying for that helps feed their families is too much to ask. Can't wait to be able to work again.

Are you suggesting that we need to ask pretty please for the software that I use to run my business to be restored to working order @seth.madore  ? You are way out of touch sir. 'Flies with honey...'

To be completely honest, I think the criticism has been very mild for something that has not seen a solution in over three weeks.

Hey all! has been more than a month on this subject, we have no updates yet? Sorry, but one month doesn't seem to be all that "utmost urgent", thanks!
