Hi Forum,

without prompting an error CAM does not create a helix for a pocket op.

Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Thanks. Jörg

Hi Rob,

OK, here it is. It is a test, so please do not bother about unclean history.

@j2

Hi Jorg, I had a look and it seems you had it as an "open" pocket, the software is most likely to start off the material for an open pocket as it thinks it can start outside.

I have changed it to a "closed" pocket and also it needed the stock boundary setting to the pocket limits.

Anyway, have a look at the attached file and let us all know if it is on the right track for you.  Smiley Happy Smiley Happy

Thank you Rob,

that was the right hint. Do you have an explanation, why there is a distinction between picking the 2 contours vs. picking the surface? Sure the program designers have a conceptual idea for that behavior.

When you select the surface Fusion can see 2 open edges so it clears the whole face. What you'll notice when you select the closed profile is it doesn't clean the outer corner and will only just clean the 2 open edges. To do this properly you should either make a sketch or use a 3d op. 2d ops are not stock aware so in this case 3d will do a better job. All comes down to use the right tool for the job.

Also @engineguy your selection of 2 profiles is not the correct way to create a boundary, see start of screen cast.

The rest of the screencast shows the difference between a 2d and 3d toolpath. File's attached.
