there should be a way to run a report of how a workspace is setup with detail of each field and its properties. this should also include the details from Grid tabs and how the full workspace is set up along with groups and permissions. under Admin>Workspace Manger> *Report for each workspace. this would help when changes need to occur in a workspace, the details in a report would help determine how big a change to a workspace would be and would also be easier to implement changes to workspaces.
