Deleting stale 3D PCB that are unlinked to 2D

Hello,

I have an electronic design and generated a 3D PCB from my 2D board. However I most likely screw-up a few times synchronizing the 2D PCB to 3D and 3D back to 2D (tuning holes placement) and ended-up with errors. I unlinked the corrupted 3D PCB and generated a new one from scratch from my 2D again. Now I have a stale 3D PCB file in my workspace I'd like to delete. However, I'm getting an error message it is still "in use".

In the file details in the data panel, the "Used in" tab says that the item is not referenced by any other designs, but the delete command says otherwise.

How can I clean that up?

Thanks!

Hi @relaxmax01 ,

Sorry to hear that you're having trouble.

There is a workaround to delete the break linked 3D PCB design:

  1. Create a new folder in the Data Panel
  2. Right click the break linked 3D PCB design from the Data Panel -> Select Move -> Move the 3D PCB file to the new created folder
  3. Right click the new created folder -> Select Delete -> Then the folder and the moved in 3D PCB file will be deleted together.

Hope it helps.

Regards,

Helen

Thanks Helen for the tip. I created a "trash" sub folder and moved those files in it, and as suggested try to delete the entire folder. no success: still getting the warning "a version of some design has been referenced by drawings...etc". I checked each of those files and none of them have any reference in their "Used In" or "Drawings" tabs.

Next step?

I'm having the same problem.  I tried moving the file to a new folder and deleting the folder, but I still get the in use errors.

Hi @relaxmax01 , @robmacklin ,

Sorry for any inconvenience.

In this case, I'd suggest you create a trash project -> Move the break linked 3D PCB file into the trash project -> Right click project -> Archive it.

I'd like to explain a little bit about this, the reason why we cannot delete the break linked 3D PCB file is because when you promote old version of 2D PCB or Fusion Electronics design which linked to old version of that 3D PCB file, the old version of linked 3D PCB file need to be opened together.

This is similar behavior as Fusion 3D models as x-reference.

So sorry for any inconvenience and hope it helps a little.

Regards,

Helen

Thanks for the information, it helps to understand why the application works this way.  However, since the 3D PCB file is now broken with a circular reference problem, even if it was needed to restore an older version, wouldn't the same problem occur?

I just received an update to version 2.0.10032 and the problem happened again.  At least now I know how to recover until the problem gets fixed by Autodesk.

hum.. I created a dummy project at my home root, however when selecting the files to move in my other project, it seems I can only move them within that project, I don't see an option to select other projects from the root ?

Hi @relaxmax01 ,

Did you notice there is scrollbar in the Move to dialog which will allow you to select the project under your current hub?

You are only able to move the file to another project in the same Hub, but cannot cross Hub.

Hope it helps.

Hi Helen,

I'm not sure what Hub is; but no I don't have a project scrollbar in my move option (by right click any file on the left in data panel --> Move).

I created a dummy design (just a plain box, no dependencies) and same result, the Move dialog box does not show an option to move across project as in the screenshot above.

(F360 version: 2.0.10032)

It turns out that my project where not part of a Fusion Teams but in personal storage. Once migrating all my projects to a Fusion Teams, I'm able to move those files in the dummy Trash project as suggested by Helen and archive it.
