Creating full device (symbol, footprint, and 3D model) from UltraLibrarian

Hi there,

I'm trying to create a new device in a library from files downloaded from UltraLibrarian into the most recent Fusion 360.  The part I am trying import has definitions for all of these (ATSAMD21E17AAF).  How do I create a coherent device from these parts?

I can run the *.scr I get from choosing the Eagle format, but this just gives me the footprint; no 3D model and the "symbol" is just the text "Add=next Swap=0".  I can't figure out how to add the 3D STEP file or get the symbol to all show up as a single device.

Could I get some instructions on how to use UltraLibrarian parts?

Thanks

Hi @fuecarlos

I've had this exact problems a few days ago. The ultralibrarian eagle script for some reason fails building the symbol, so you'll have to build that by hand. Footprint & 3D package work, though. Here are the steps I followed:

  • I've downloaded the step file and eagle library from utralibrarian.com, and ran the .scr in the eagle library zip file. This created the device, symbol and footprint, but threw a bunch of errors. The symbol was empty, the footprint had the texts at wrong locations, and since the symbol was empty, the pin connections of course didn't work either.
  • I've then Created a New Package, which already contained the footprint from the .scr in a sketch called Pad. I inserted the step file downloaded from ultralibrarian, which fit the footprint perfectly. Phew.
  • I then created the symbol and connected the pins by hand, easy enough.
  • Finally, added some nice text with hyperlinks pointing to the TI datasheets and ultralibrarian for future reference as description

Hope that helps,

Alex

Hi Alex,

Okay, good to know I'm not alone!  So you just did an "insert derive" to get the STEP model into the new 3D model for the device/pads?

Is there a model provider that is a little more plug and play?  I got to UltraLibrarian because there was a link from DigiKey, but I'm open to other options 🙂

This is my first time creating a new device, thanks for your patience!

Hey @fuecarlos, no, you're most definitely not alone, lol 🙂

While I've been using Fusion for a couple of years and used to do some work in Eagle many years ago, I'm new to F360 ECAD myself. So not the most knowledgeable person around either.

I used ultralibrarian as it was linked by TI for some of their parts. I've also tried componentsearchengine.com, but not only does this require you to install their "Library Loader", they also want you to register. No, thanks.

If you or anyone else know another good source, I'm all ears. However, if those were reliable and common, I doubt they would have invested in this nice parametric 3D Package creator. For parts that have more or less standard packages, there's little benefit downloading from UltraLibrarian. The generator is quick and easy.

As for using the step file, I selected the footprint created by the downloaded .scr and selected "Create New 3D Model". This creates a 3D Package with the footprint included in the "Pad" sketch. Then I right-clicked the previously uploaded step file in the Data Panel on the left, and selected "Insert into Current Design". No need to derive, as we won't be changing the step file. This resulted in a 3D Package with footprint and 3D model, so any issues are immediately apparent.

Hope that helps,

Alex

Oh, wow, I had no idea about the right-click to insert, thanks!
