Where to start learning basic electronics and circuits

I've been wanting to learn about electronics and circuits and I don't know where to get started. What's the best way/recommendations for a beginner to start learning (books, youtube videos, electronic kits etc.)

I'm certain many users will provide you awesome suggestions, but I wanted to begin this thread by suggesting that you take a look at some of the comprehensive basic electronic lessons available on Instructables.

I would recommend the original Arduino starter kit. I started there a few years ago and it was an easy, nice and fun way to start. Then there's a book called encyclopedia of electronic components. It is also aimed at beginners and it will prove useful as you learn more. Another nice one is Arduino cookbook.

Get some good second hand textbooks if you really want to dive deep. If you are looking for something comprehensive, I'd recommend the Art of Electronics as a great reference.
