Component Reference Designator prefix not updating

I initially created a component (switch) with a prefix of S.

I placed the switch in my design. The reference designator was S1.

I realized that the prefix was not in line with our library standards.

I changed the prefix in the library component to SW, saved the library.

In the design, I did an update all libraries. All attributes changed for the switch except the reference designator.

Next I tried replace part, still reference designator would not update to the SW prefix.

I placed a new instance of the component in the schematic and that instance had the SW prefix (SW1).

I ended up changing the first instance manually in the part properties because I didn't want to delete it and place a new instance since it had already been routed.

Anyone else seen this? Am I doing something wrong? Is there another way to do it? Is it a bug?

My fusion version

Thanks for all you do. Keep up the good work.

Most likely you didn't update the library correct or the wrong library.

Normally the designator changes when updating

I had another component have this issue. A LED was changed from D to DS as the prefix and did not update the reference designator. I had to update in the design manually.

Hi @chuck_toddN7PTC,

I hope you're doing well. So you are not doing anything wrong and this isn't a bug. This behavior is by design, basically once a component is in the design and has already received a name. The UPDATE and REPLACE commands are designed to not rename the component. In most cases, it's not good practice to quietly change component reference designators.

In these scenarios you have to manually update the component names using the NAME command or the inspector.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.
