Adding 3D model to the library

I am having always problem when adding new 3D Model or footprint, it is not visible even new library was saved and circuit updated.

There is let say factory rcl library, where is CPOL-EU tree and there is CPOL-EUE5-10.5 cap, what is with built in 3D model to small for me. I want to make it 25mm high.

I make so: right click in 2D pcb editor, then open footprint, and then create new 3D model or attached existing one. After all, playing with generator and saving 3D model, they are listed,  but when I want to use new part by replace and take it from the new saved library, the new 3D model is not visible as an option. It seems they are not combined/signed to the part.

1. What is the proper way? I always miss something, adding new part? or a symbol? but i want to add only 3D model. In the end there is always multiple 3D models or libraries in team folder not used.

2. Can I add new 3D model to the existing rcl lib coming with F360 or do i have to always save it as my own?

regards

I am not sure about that, I always have problem with linking model or footprint to the part. I lost like two hours to somehow lucky or randomly get small window on the right where you have options like package, connect and so on . It is so hidden. I can t repeat that.I had to again create another copy of library and gain attached existing 3d model then somehow it has been opened.

Hi everyone,

The key here is to realize that if you want to modify anything form the default libraries it must first be copied to one of your personal libraries. The default libraries are protected and locked so any attempts to make changes to them is ultimately going to fail.

The correct process is to copy the part to your personal library and modify it there. Once you made the changes then you have to update the design to use the new library. Normally an update command will suffice to sync the schematic to the library.

Let me know if you continue to run into problems.

Jorge thanks, I know it just wanted to be sure if this is a must. But where is the point where package or footprint is linked to the part/ component?

I can create footprints or 3D models but how to assign them to particular part, my are like "free electrons" not assigned and not listed while trying to select package or replace, after librarysync/update. this window is so hidden. There are like four buttons: package, web, delete, connect and the list.

Hello.
In my case I assign this way:

Open a personal library

Click with mouse button on footprint

Click Create New 3D Model

Kristey_2-1626421674473.png

Save the 3D Package in a folder (I use just one folder and save all of my 3D Packages in the same folder)

Now you can use a 3D package generator or use a STEP model for example.

To use a step model you need import the model I use a temporary folder to this: TRASH

Insert your 3D model on you 3D Package

Check the position and orientation:

Break the link between 3D package and 3D model

Kristey_12-1626422437687.png

Save the 3D package on Finish Button

Kristey_13-1626422520733.png

Delete your temporary 3D model

Kristey_14-1626422635932.png

And for finish save your library.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All models that are in Trash folder are temporary or for some reason have a dependency that doesn't let them be eliminated.
This happens because the link was not broken or something I don't know what it is, because I try to delete and some models without any component in "Used In" don't allow to be deleted.

I do the same but the new model will not appear until you link it. And this appears somehow after you click symbol? or part? or footprint, an then on the right you will see 4 buttons, it is always on the right. It is very hidden and confusing.

@jorge_garciaSince like 2 updates there is a bug, when you click "open device",  footprint or symbol" the library editor is opening, but the selected part(from right click) is not automatically selected in editor. I wish you good luck if you work with Wurth library connectors, where is  hundreds of them with.. friendly for eyes names like: 6221122121, 622564584, 6222315454 and user have to find the right one. this cost closing editor, clicking part attributes and remembering friendly part number 6222xxxxx then back and scrolling a list with hundreds parts and picking the right one. It is not user friendly, and it has worked fine in the past.

Hi @christopher2KLSVU ,

I think you reported this issue before. I'm going to confirm with the Library developers and make sure this is being worked on. I'll report back if they need any additional info.

You are right @christopher2KLSVU.
When you click "open device" just open the library editor, maybe it's a bug
