Beginner in Fusion 360, need help

I am very new and I created a spray paint can in Fusion 360 (which took forever to figure out).  I would like to make it into a maker holder with a lid that opens and closes.  I have watched many videos but can't seem to find the right type of hinge to make so it opens and closes.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I have added a photo of the can I created.Hinge to open and close lidHinge to open and close lid

Hi @Louis0828 Do you need help designing the hinge, or creating the motion? If you have a hinge drawn, a revolute joint is probably going to be your answer. If you have some more specifics, I'm sure we can help you solve this.

Hello,

First thank you for your response. I would need help designing the hinge. The idea is to take the image I uploaded and separate the top part of the spray can from the cylinder portion, place a hinge on the back part so the top part of the can will open and close. I hollowed out the can and would like to use is to store my markers, pens and pencils. This is the type of hinge I am looking for just at a larger scale.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

OK, the hinge will be made in two parts. One feature that connects to the can and one feature that connects to the lid. Do you know how to create construction planes yet? I think what might be a great idea is if you can post your file so we can work on it together.

I have worked with construction planes maybe once and that was just trying different things.  I think I saved it as the correct file format.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi. .f3d would be the file type you want to export. Did you draw it from scratch in Fusion or was this a file that you downloaded?

I made a small example to show how you might go about making something like this. Note that there are issues like the lid hits the canister portion. I thought this might be something that could get you started though.

Thanks,

Kevin

@kellings,

That is exactly what I am looking for.  That is so awesome!  Now I just need to learn how it was done by watching the timeline.  I corrected the file format and this is correct file.  Thank you very much for all your help!!!

@kellings It was something I designed from scratch.

@kellings I was hoping there was a way you could explain how you archived the hinge.  I am having a difficult time recreating.  I hope I am not bothering too much.

No, you aren't bothering me at all. There are two ways this can be done. You can model the part somewhere and then place it using a joint. Or as I have done, I drew it where it needed to be, and then used an as built joint.

An important rule about joints. They can only work between components. When I looked at your file, everything was a body. You also want one component in your design that can't move, either by a rigid as built or by grounding the component.

@kellings Thanks again.  I appreciate the help, I will keep going through your file and hopefully can make some sense of it.  I will look for some classes or something for Fusion 360 because I am not sure what all of those things are and how they all work together.  I truly do appreciate your help.  The file I designed was literally from knowing nothing.  I just started making shapes until it looked right.  I was able to print it which was a plus but now I think I swam to far out.  Again thank you for your time and I will continue to reference your file until I get it.

@kellings ,

Hello and how are you?  I wanted to see if you could look over my design.  I tried to replicate your hinge to the best of my ability.  I can't seem to get the hinge to rotate 90 degrees open with the pin I inserted.  The oin is for printing purposes.  I was hoping you could provide some insight to what I am doing wrong.  I know I may have a lot of issues in the design but I am learning and trying to get it right.  I appreciate all your help.

Thank you,

Louis Velazquez

Hi @Louis0828

You're making good progress on your design. A few thoughts.

  1. To keep the components in the correct location, I added a couple assembly Joints (see the attached file).
  2. When the Top of Can component rotates, it interferes with the Bottom of Can component. I'd suggest moving the extension further away from the can.
  3. How will this be assembled? Should the pin be a separate component and how will the pin stay in place. Maybe a pin with threads or a screw?

Also, note that we have support help specifically for students.

    2. Autodesk Fusion 360 student Discord channel

Hope this helps.

@dan.banach,

Thank you for the assist!  It was very helpful!  I was able to correct the clearance and now it is no longer touching the back of the can when it opens.  I appreciate the links you shared, will check those out.  I have been trying really hard to improve not only my design but my understanding as well.  Also in regards to the pin I was hoping to print in place.  I combined the pin to the faces of the hinge so that it was not its own component.  Well that's what I believe I did (lol).  Please let me know if you think this is a possibility from what you can see.

Thanks again,

Louis

@Louis0828

You could 3D print the components together, but you'll need to look at the gap between the components. Do a search for fit or tolerance between 3D printed parts. I'd also be concerned that after 3D printing the components in one print that they'll be stuck together.

You'll also want to relook at your design. Looks like the Cap will interfere with the can when it rotates up. You can get design ideas by going to Grabcad or Thingiverse.

Hope these ideas help.

Hi @Louis0828 So to be away. I got selected for jury duty and have been away from the computer.

How are you making out now? Looks like Dan got you some things you can work with. He is still taking me to school all these years after first meeting him.

Hello @kellings,

Yes, @dan.banach was very helpful!  I think I am doing ok...  I finished the design, to the best of my abilities thus far.  Working on the pin, would like to do a print in place, so trying to figure that piece out.  Here is the latest model, no need to apologize.  Very grateful for all the help!

Good Morning @kellings and @dan.banach,

I have a design question, I would like to combine the two highlighted pieces in the attached photo to make a new body.  For the purpose of being able to print as a separate piece and then for assembly; slide the new body in to the bottom of the can and the lid and have the new body either snap in place or I can use a glue to hold it in place.  I hope what I am saying makes sense cause it does in my head (lol)...

Hi @Louis0828

Thanks for staying with your project. 3D printing the components separately seems to be a good approach. One idea, what about simplifying the design by using a "J" hook? See the attached .f3d file.

Hope this helps.

-Dan
