Wrong stress

I am sketching a 3.5 x 3.5 x 60 inch wood post. On the surface of that post I want some text cut into the surface 3/8" deep. I have sketched the text, selected the text, moved it to the location I want, set the minus extrusion depth. When I rotate it to see if it has actually cut into the wood post, it shows that it is extruded out the BACK side 3/8". Wrong am I doing wrong? Wrong surface? Please help if you have a moment

When you sketched the text did you create the text on the surface you wanted to cut into?
