Why do you have to turn off design history to convert mesh to tspline?

Ok, why does this happen in this way to get a t-spline model from an STL?

  • Start with STL (tri's)
  • Convert to quad's  (Instant Meshes or Memento)
  • Open Fusion
  • Create Base Feature
  • Import Mesh
  • Finish Base Feature
  • Turn off Design History
  • Convert Mesh to T-Spline
  • Turn back on Design History

It seems if the only thing needed to convert a mesh to a t-spline is to turn off design history...but why?  Seems like a needless step, since you can just turn it back on right afterwards?

Thanks!

Agreed, this is not good.  To be honest, it is just one of those things where we had too much to do, and this was considered a corner case, so it never got moved over to history-based modeling.

We are working on a better mesh environment, which will solve this and other issues.  Not sure exactly when it will see the light of day, but it's coming.

Ok, no problem....but the request "turn STL into CAD model" is one I get a lot from clients....and if more people knew about this, I think it would be of great interest to people.

Mesh is a ways off, though (Spring/Summer, right?) as far as I know. Super happy to see some Meshmixer features being considered for Fusion, though!

Can this be considered to be moved over to History Based Modeling?

@nkloski, yes, it can be considered for conversion to a history-based feature.  It's only a question of priority:  how this compares against other enhancements.  Is this one on the Fusion Idea Station?

And, yes, we get the request for mesh->solid often as well.  We're working on this, but its actually a pretty challenging problem.

It seems to me that Fusion can actually do that pretty well...it is just a training thing using separate tools at this point 🙂

I will place a request in the IdeaStation, thanks!
