Why can't these lines scale independently? Offset lines?

Hi I have a requirement where I have two lines that need to be offset by a given distance so I drew one line then used the offset option to set the second line a given distance from the other.

I now want to change the length of one of the lines but they are linked together. I can't seem to find an intuitive way in the interface to have these have their lengths independent from each other.

Can someone point me in the right direction? Also I was wondering what the wierd comb looking icons are next to things?

Sorry I'm very new but I would have thought hovering on things would have at least given tool tips to new users as to what things are? or simple things like clicking on a length in the details about a given line would allow you to alter that length on the fly.

Delete the offset icon, to make the lines independant.  You will lose the dimension, but the line will not move, unless you change the spacing, 

Using Offset creates the dependency of both having to be the same, at a spacing, handy for chains of lines but not so for just a single line.

You can draw two lines and dimension the spacing to avoid the offset length relationship.

Sorry there are no tooltips when you hover over icons which means you don't actually get to understand what they are intuitively..

There are only 2 icons in that original pic you posted, but as you say no tips when hovering.

However they arrive immediately when you use the command.

Offset looks like the pair on the left. Regular dimension looks like the pair on the right.
