Why can't I dimension a projected view?

OK, I'll admit it - I don't find the drawing environment at all intuitive. Things happen for no apparent reason. Here's an example..

I'm making a drawing and using a named view in order to get the correct orientation of a component. I make a projection and then attempt to add dimensions, but am not allowed to dimension orthogonal views. Why not? - see Screencast. Surely the whole purpose of a projected view is to dimension it, or am I being naive?

No issues with this function on my side.  Please attach your model so the forum users can troubleshoot your issue.

I'm at a loss. I've just applied the latest F360 update and started afresh with a new drawing from scratch.

I switch to a named view and create a new drawing from scratch. I select a 2:1 scaling with the named view, and suppress everything except the component I'm interested in.

I create a a side projection and start to add dimensions. It works for the base item, but not for the projected view.  I must be doing something wrong, but what?

I just don't get it.

I've attached the model and the Screencast records what I did.

The behavior doesn't look correct. I'm going to send this to our developers.

In the meantime, for applying the dimensions to the projected view, try to use the linear dimension tool instead of the "smart" dimension one, as shown in the video below.

I hope it helps for now.

Thanks for your interest. It never occurred to me to use linear, radial and diameter dimensions, but they all worked fine. It seems that smart dimensions don't like projections.
This problem held me up for about 2 days but I'm now back drawing again thanks to your insight.

Glad I could help.

The smart dimension tool in general works fine with the projected views.

I believe in this case he is struggling to understand what type of dimension must be applied, since the view is the projection of a base view created with a Named View.

I'll ask our developers to investigate more on this.

I also had this same problem and the work around of selecting the specific dimension type worked for me so that made me happy. However, there is always a 'however', I am unable to place some other drawing features on the auxiliary views. For instance center-lines and center-marks don't work.

Did this get looked at? I have the same behavior and have to use the linear dimension tool instead of the smart dimension tool for any parts for which a named view is used to make the drawing. The workflow for this seems strangely complex for something so common.

Reviving this topic because I'm encountering the same issue. I place a base view, and am able to dimension that as normal. Once I project a front view from the base view, I can no longer use the smart dimension tool. I am able to place linear, diameter, etc. in the projected view, but I cannot place center marks or center lines which are integral to properly dimension this part. Just doesn't make sense, as someone else pointed out, surely the main purpose of a projected view is to dimension features that aren't able to be properly dimensioned in the base view.

As always, any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Art

Can you File>Export your *.f3d file to your local drive and then Attach it here to a Reply?

Without seeing the file - my guess is that you have geometry that projects as spline.

Sure thing, I've exported and attached the part in question.

@Art5

I didn't see a history in your file.

I only work with geometry that has a history.

BTW - you should have started a new thread (this thread has been marked as Solved) with a link back to this thread as reference.

I work in a prototype shop, everything we build is proprietary, non-disclosures and whatnot. Due to this, I'm not able to share the part in it's original form with history, so I pulled the stock model into a new file and was able to recreate the exact issue I'm describing. In fact, when I make a drawing from this part, it won't let me do centerlines or centermarks on the base view either. It's a very simple model, and I'm certain there aren't any splines. I will go ahead and make a new thread, I'm not sure why OP marked this as solved because it clearly isn't.

I marked it as solved because the suggestion of using specific dimension
types rather than smart dimensions worked for me. Clearly that was just a
work-a-round and not a real solution.
