where to start - Workflow for wrapping a 2d design around sphere

I'm somewhat new to Fusion 360 and not sure how to get started in putting a 2D design onto a 3D sphere like what is shown in the attached picture.  I'm not even sure of the correct terminology to use to describe what I want to do.  I've searched forums, youtube, etc... I'd like to find a method that would work equally well for text or a geometric pattern.  Thanks in advance for your advice.

This may work for you:

  1. Create cones in the Sheet Metal workspace equal to each row of text in the sphere. (Compound curves aren't allowed in the Sheet Metal workspace.) (There are multiple threads on how to add text to curved surfaces using Sheet Metal tools.)
  2. Unfold the cones.
  3. Create the extruded text on the unfolded cones.
  4. Refold the cones.
  5. Use Combine/Intersect between the cones and the sphere to convert the cones to spherical shape.

Thank you for your response.  You have an interesting idea.  I haven't had a need to use the sheet metal tools much but  I'll experiment this week and let you know how things work out.
