So as per title, how do you do it without blowing up the timeline or making it a mess?

So lets assume you have Component Smoove and you initially place it in the parent component, but eventually you realised that it needs to moved/transfer into a sub-component, how do you move Smoove into that sub-component and still retain a "good" timeline, and vice versa, move from a sub-component to a parent component?

Also if the component has joints in it, what should you do?

This is a pretty easy task using your mouse and the assembly browser.  Any existing joints come along for the ride and should not affect the task.  Take a look at the screencast.

Now understand, there may be assemblies that will react differently depending on their relationships.

My experience is that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes you can move components to sub-assemblies and sometimes not. If it works then there are often strange side effects.

The only thing that always works for me and leaves a clean timeline: Copy, Paste New, Delete Original.
But then you have to redefine the joints.

The best solution: Planning ahead. But I know it's not always easy.
