What is the best technique to handle multiple "similar" parts? Configurations, Derives, Paste new....

Hi,

 

I'm trying to design several different cabinets that will have assorted drawers.  All of the drawers will be the same design, but will have multiple different heights.  Imagine a wooden chest of drawers with three short drawers, three medium height drawers, and three really tall drawers.  Each drawer has many nested parts: 4 sides, front, back, face, bottom, knob, and screw(s).  User variables are fine for the drawer width, thicknesses, and bottom placement.  Knob placement will also be adjusted based on the height of the drawer.

 

Final goal will be to flat pack all of the parts onto sheets for cnc.

 

I would prefer to have everything in one file if possible.  From searching through forums it sounds like the older technique is to create the drawer in a separate file and then do multiple insert derives.  Paste new might also work.  However, I'm having trouble making sure all of the parts reference to the changed parent or the first sub part such as a side.

 

Is there a way to do a component named parameter with per instance values?  Each drawer could have a unique height value and then all of the sub components would just use parent.height where needed.  I was able to do this in Sketchup over 5 years ago.

Using linked/external components with configurations is not an "older workflow" and is what I'd recommend.

However, I'd like to point out that configurations are only available with paid subscriptions.
