What is really possible with T-Splines.....

So some coworkers keep talking about how limited T-Splines usefulness is. To be honest it's not limitations of T-Splines or Fusion it's the person using them and their knowledge of the tools. I have even seen post here on the boards downing on T-Splines.

So anyways a friend challenged me to a bet, he claims I can not get the orc head model from Topogun into Fusion 360 as a CAD model fully editable. The head is made up of over a million polygons. Almost 2 million. Here is what the highres model looks like.

The challenge was two fold:

1st part is to model the head using only Fusion 360 and that's what I am going to post today.

2nd part is I can use whatever tools I have as long as I end up with a fully editable CAD model.

So anyways here is what I came up with after 3 hours in Fusion Sculpt environment using just T-Splines.

T-Spline Test2 v1 v1.png

T-Spline Test3 v1 v1.png

Here is a video showing that the T-Spline mesh is fully editable:

I am not happy with this at all but I think it's a good start. More to come....
Cheers

You have to look really close to see any tooling lines. I made a few mistakes so I'm going to mill another one tomorrow.

A lot of what you see is actually just dust...all I did was pull it right off the mill and snapped some pics.

Stunning! The design and the execution.

But also what sort of machinery one can buy relatively inexpensively that allows to turn this from a CAD model into physical reality.

@TrippyLighting

I have found that "just about" any machine can be made to give nice results as long as you take the time to calibrate it and make sure it's as ridged as possible.

We have some mods planned for the Shapeoko 3 but honestly out of the box (provided you assemble and calibrate it correctly) you really can't beat the feed rates and quality of cuts.

I have built cheap rapid prototype machines, engraving machines and mills produce awesome results. Sometimes it just takes time to work within your limitations to get the results you want.

@daniel_lyall

I have been machining for over 15 years and wood working for 30 years, I hope I'm doing it right by now. Smiley Very Happy

@colin.smith

Thanks Colin,

The original one posted here was too thin and fragile so I revamped the model and milled a new one that turned out much better then this one.

I will post updated picks this weekend.
