If you have an assembly of say 10 components Top down modeled and each of these components is machined, you quite quickly end up with a complex file since most machining has fixtures, vices chucks etc all then modeled in this one file. Is this what is commonly done? Or the approach I took which is create the assembly then export out each component and create a separate machining file ( not ideal since the components are not linked).

I am interested as to what is regarded as good practice.

derive works for this.  allows you to have separate models for fixturing etc, but keep the components linked back to the original assembly.
