want to scale component using dimension tool by having only one dimension not use percentage

New to fusion 360, thank you for the help.
I have a component made from a svg file and I what to take that drawing as it is and scale it with one dimension length ,say 4.5 inches to .75 inches. But I do not want to have to figure out a percentage. I just want to measure the object with a line type tool and the change the shown length of the measure to .75 inches and have the whole thing scale down accordingly. I am starting with a "component" at the top tier of browser... then using photoshop to bringing in hand drawn svg file from Tiffs scanned than to PNG then go to a website for free svg converter from png then back to fusion insert SVG in Fusion 360. I want to them scale the whole thing as mentioned above without using a percentage that is in the modify tabs under scale. It seems you should be able to do it like the dimension tool. But this is not a sketch. it is a 3D component.

The joint command does not link to the origin either. Only to other objects

Hi @patrick_william

Thanks for posting the file. A couple thoughts.

  1. The reason that the Align and Move tools didn't work was because the second point needs to be on another component of the assembly Origin point as shown in the image.
    danbanach_0-1689891660623.png
  2. I edited the sketch that the SVG file was imported, but I was NOT able to move the imported SVG.
  3. I exported the this Sketch to a DXF file, then imported the DXF file. The I was able to move the geometry on the sketch as shown in the image.
NOTE: Edited post. Instead of exporting the sketch as a DXF, you can unfix the geometry. The next post lists the steps.

    Hope this helps.

Hi @patrick_william

Instead of exporting the sketch as a DXF, do the following.

  1. Edit the Sketch that contains the SVG data.
  2. Select all the green SVG data by drawing a rectangle around the geometry.
  3. With all the geometry selected, right-click and click on Fix/UnFix. The geometry should now be blue.
  4. Move the geometry as needed.

Hope this gives you what you need.

Hi @patrick_william

Glad that my last suggestion is helping. To export a Sketch as a DXF file, in the Browser, expand the component and sketch, then right-click on the Sketch nd in the menu there will be an option to Export the Sketch as a DXF.

After I posted about the DXF file, I saw that the SVG file was Fixed. Unfixing the geometry is easier than exporting and importing the DXF file.

For the disappearing sketch, ensure that the visibility of the sketch is visible. In the Browser, under the active component, expand the Sketch folder and ensure the visibility of the Sketch is on (eye icon).

Hope this solves the last issue.

Thank you Dan for all your effort, much appreciated. ComRAIN1 has 2 sketches for some unknown reason. The eye is on could this be why it disappears? Also ComclearC1 's origin is docked over the main origin. How do I move it off the main origin.  thank you so much.

Hi @patrick_william

Here is what I learned.

For ComRAIN1, Sketch1 does not contain any data and can be deleted. On the lower-left corner, on the Timeline, right-click on Sketch1 and click Delete from the menu.

Then edit Sketch 2,.

  1. Select all the green SVG data by dragging a rectangle around the geometry.
  2. With all the geometry selected, right-click and click on Fix/UnFix. The geometry should now be blue.
  3. Move the geometry as needed.

Wow that Worked too!

Ok one more and I think I will be all set on this chain. ComclearC1 was miss moved by me to the Mother Component origin (partsv4)  by mistake. I want to have ComclearC1 to be the same as the other separate components ( Comnote, Comstar, ComRain) to have its own origin. and then there will be the origin of the whole group, which is good as well. How do I pull Comclear1 off (partsv4)'s origin and set up Comclear1 own origin?

Hi @patrick_william

To move one of the components, do the following.

  1. Start the Move tool by pressing the "M" key.
  2. In the Move dialog change the Move Object option to Component.
  3. I changed the Move Type option to Free Move.
  4. Move the component as needed.

because the origin is at the 0,0,0 axis ( the same as the original of the high tier parent component partv4)  it does not take the individual origin with it

Meaning the origin placement I would be moving to get a new independent placing is the same placement on the grid that it is now. There are  2 origins on top of each other.... one the component (ComclearC1) and the other the parent origin of (partsv4). I need to move the origin of (ComclearC1) vs move the component ComclearC1 to the origin,  Can I move the origin from under the other same spot origin?
