VISIBILITY OF ASSEMBLY ITEMS FROM ONE SHEET TO THE NEXT IN A SINGLE DRAWING

Here's the deal.

Created an assembly with several hundred bodies and components in it.

For better or worst I decided to do all drawings on multiple sheets within one drawing file.

Started with top level assembly on sheet 1, next biggest sub assembly on sheet 2 etc.

to isolate the components I needed for each sheet I either suppressed the components or hid the bodies I was detailing on that sheet.

I finished up my 4th sheet, and decided to change something on the 3rd sheet and WHAM!

The items I had suppressed / hid on sheet 4 where still missing on sheet 3, 2, 1 etc.

Totally blowing the drawing out of the water.

Anyone find a way to isolate the sheets?

Anyone found the best way to handle this work flow?

Hi @rapiddsol,

Sorry to hear your having trouble laying out your drawing sheets. The good news is, Drawings do support the workflow your attempting.

When creating base views, there are 2 options; you can either create a new reference to the model, or you can re-use an existing reference. Creating a new reference allows the associated base view and its child views to remain isolated from changes made to other references within the drawing. Re-using an existing reference allows multiple base views and their child views to remain in sync when changing are made to the reference. So when creating your second and subsequent base views, make sure Reference = Create New within the DRAWING VIEWS dialog.

Once you've created the base view and all required child views, suppressing or hiding components and bodies within the browser will only update the base view and its child views. All other references and their associated base views and child views will remain un-changed. And although I've shown this in a single sheet, the same applies across multiple sheets as well.

And here's a couple of tips to help you figure out whats what. First tip, each new reference within the browser is suffixed by a number; the first reference should be ":1", the second ":2", the third ":3" and so on. If you find multiple references using the same number, it means you've re-used the reference. Second tip, if you select the reference within the browser, all drawing views (base, projected, section and detail) associated to the reference within the current sheet will highlight. This will help you identify which drawing views will update when you suppress or hide components within a reference. However, if you've re-used the selected reference on another sheet, there is no feedback. You'll need to use tip 1 to identify any re-use.

And the third tip, when launching the Base View command from the toolbar, the command creates a new reference by default. However, when launching the Base View command from a reference's right-click menu in the browser, the command re-uses the selected reference.

Hope this helps, but do let me know if this hasn't solved the issue.

Thanks,

Andrew

Andrew,
Thank you very much for your response.
It seems to be exactly what I needed.
I will try and implement the changes this evening and report back.
What are the chances I will be able to change my re-used reference to a new reference on my base views?

Thanks again!

Hi @rapiddsol,

Glad I could help. Unfortunately there's no way to change the reference once created. So you'll need to delete the reference which will also delete all associated drawing views and create a new reference.

Thanks,

Andrew
