Valid Expressions

How does one discover what a valid expression is when creating parameters? Is there a list of valid expressions available? The Learning site doesn't even have a Parameters entry.  Is there some other documentation for parameters hidden away? Videos showing how to use parameters are too simplistic. 

Can I use any valid expression or formula created in Excel?  Is an If|Then|Else construct a valid expression?
