Using contact sets and animation

Two questions...

I've set up this model to try out using cams.

cam.jpg

I have used contact sets to drive the cam.

Question 1: How do I reverse the direction of Animate Model on Rev 5?

Question 2: If I drive the cam shaft by hand the cam follower works fine but if I use "Animate Model" the cam follower doesn't move at all. What am I missing?

Thanks in advance!

I do not know if you will be able to animate your Contact Set in Fusion 360.  Contact sets are very weak in this application and are hard to animate between components.  As far as changing the revolve direction of a Revolve joint, my method is to use a Joint Origin for one side of the joint.  You can Reorient the Z axis using the Joint Origin dialog box which will allow you to change the direction.  I used a much simpler model to demonstrate the process in my Screencast but it can be applied to your model.  It may take a few edits but you can get it.

That's great! Thanks John.

So you mention contact sets being weak in Fusion and I remember you have said similar before. Is there other software that is better for making moving models?

Just FYI - we are currently developing a solution to cam-follower type designs.  I cannot make any promises of when it might be delivered, but the solution is being built to handle just this kind of case.  Stay tuned...

Autodesk Inventor can handle Contact Sets much better than Fusion 360 but you face a steep subscription cost unless you are a student.  Inventor is the only one I can speak about but I am sure there are others.

I was continuing to play with your model.  Often you can get Contact Sets to work in Fusion 360 if they are "directed to certain joints".  By this I mean they do not transfer motion across another joint.  You have a pivot joint being controlled by the contact set and it is a hard type to control.  Below is a contact set working to drive a Revolve joint which Fusion 360 has an easier time with.  Maybe a rearrangement of your assembly will do the trick. (the screen capture is animated)

I took your key components over into a simpler assembly.  I modified the cam follower for minimum contact and even tried to use a different style of cam.  The animation will run but the cam is not smooth no matter what I try.  Gave it a whirl but I just do not think you are going to get a smooth motion out of this arrangement.  I have attached a small assembly using a direct cam motion and it animates just fine.  If you could try and design around this idea, you may get away with it.  My practice assembly using your components and the direct cam motion assembly are attached.

Hi John,

Your replies are always so interesting and useful, even when it is about learning some shortfalls in the software. I really do appreciate them.

Thank you!
