Using a Custom Template

Hello,

I created a custom drawing template to help my workflow. However, I am having trouble using the template to generate a new drawing. I have created a template with placeholder views, title block information filled in, and some text boxes around the drawing. I saved this template and it looks like this.

TemplateTemplate

I created a drawing (for a dummy part) using this template and here was the result.

I was prompted to place a base view. I noticed that the text boxes, tables, and placeholder views did not show up in this drawing. Is there something I did wrong with applying a template or have I misunderstood what features transfer from a template to a drawing?

Thanks for any help!

Hi Tim,

When you created your drawing did you do it from for a single component from the browser in the design?  The placeholder views have different types.  In the Placeholder View dialog you'll see Representation (Assembly, Component, Folded Component, etc.).  Once you place a base view of this type, it defines the type of sheet.  In your case, you've placed Assembly base views, but I'm guessing you are trying to create a single component drawing.  Since your template doesn't have a Component Detail sheet with component placeholder views, you're being asked to place the view manually in the new drawing.

If you add another sheet to your template with Component type placeholder views, then you will get the component Detail sheet with the views.  Note that if you create a new drawing of the whole assembly using the Component type sheets, you'll get a multi-sheet drawing, one sheet per component.  If you do end up getting "extra" sheets you don't want in your drawing you can use Shift or Ctrl+Select of the sheets you don't want > Right-click > Delete Sheets (Undo will bring them back if you delete too much).

One thing to keep in mind too, you don't have to use placeholder views in a template.  You can set up a template with lthe units, logo, notes, etc. you want (no placeholder views) then as we always supported in the past, manually place the base and projected views in the new drawing using that template.

Please let me know how it goes.

Thanks,
Chris

Thanks Chris you for the answer.

That seems to explain the placeholder view issues. I deleted the placeholder views and tried to create new one, but my only choice for "Representation" is "Assembly" or "Storyboard". Is there a way to get the "Component" option?

Also why did my template Text and Tables not transfer to the drawing? Is that also related to the component vs assembly issue?

Thanks,

Tim

Hi Tim,

If you open the template and hover over the tab for that sheet you'll see it still has Assembly as the default title.  Once a sheet is set up for as a certain type, it sticks.  You will have to create a new sheet (hit the + button in the sheet bar), then you will need to place a new table/text on that sheet. For the text you can copy/paste the contents of the old text into a new text object, but you can't just select the text and copy/paste, you need to click into the text object to edit.  Unfortunately you can't copy/paste the table so that will need to be recreated.

Thanks,
Chris

Chirs,

Thanks for the help. I added a new drawing sheet and selected the "Component" type. Now all my text, tables, and views work!
