Urgent! - Can't Save! Greyed out option, cmd+s does nothing

Hello all,

I hope to find a quick solution to this as it has me quite worried.

I started a file today and everything seemed fine until I went to save it. I hit cmd+s like I usually do, but it didn't give me a save prompt.

The "save" button is greyed out.

The "save" menu option under "File" is also greyed out.

When I go offline, it gives me an error - "In order to work offline we need an up to date list of your projects. Please return online to automatically refresh the list", and so I go back online. Once this message is displayed, you can't see it again - If you go back online then offline again, "save" and cmd+s just fail quietly.

Going back online, I still can't save.

I don't want to quit and lose this file.

It's been like this for about a half hour now.

Please, help me! Smiley Sad

Hi Autumn,

Can you do the following from the File menu and tell me if it works?

1. File > Export.

2. Make sure the save to my computer is checked and give it a location to save to.  This should work and at least you'll have it saved locally which you can then upload if step 3 doesn't work.

3. Also, check "Save to a project in the cloud" and select a project. It would be good to know if this works.

Best regards,

Sanjay Jayabal.

Hi @sanjay_jayabal

When I click Export, it gives me the "Offline" error message. I tried going back offline, then online again, but it still shows the error.

If I go offline and try to export it gives the same error (the "offline" error in the screencast).

I atached another screencast showing this behavior.

I still can't save, and now it seems I can't export either. Smiley Frustrated

I never saved this to start with yet, otherwise I'd try exporting from A360.

Thank you. Smiley Sad

Accepted solution

Well, I tried something and it worked.

I have "Automatic version on close" UNCHECKED in my preferences, so it always prompts me if I want to save on close.

So, I hit the "X" on the window and it let me save.

Now, it is letting me save and export just fine.

I'm not sure what hiccup happened that blocked me from saving, but if it happens to anyone else, let them try to hit the "x" and save from there, it may fix it.

Thank you for your help, @sanjay_jayabal!

I just had the same problem on windows 10.

Same solution worked for me and everything is back to normal

I have the exact same problem.  Cannot save.  It's grayed out.  The workaround doesn't work either.

I have never in 20+ years of using computers encountered a program that does not permit the user to save a file they are working on.

This message comes up every time I try to save or export:

"In order to work offline we need an up to date list of your projects. Please return online to automatically refresh the list."

I am not working offline.

Having this same issue, workaround is NOT working, and I'm on my laptop with a slowly dying battery and without my power supply.

I'm not working offline. Selecting "Diagnostic log files" from help menu does nothing. "Fusion 360 is synchronizing the data with cloud storage. Please try again in a moment." Cool. Iit's been 15 minutes, how long do you need, Fusion?

I am about to lose two hours worth of work. This is absolutely ridiculous.

Well, serves me right for not checking saving works before starting to work. I just never thought that that would be a possible scenario, I guess. I can't help but think that if Autodesk had any real competition, stuff like this wouldn't happen...

edit: Welp, my partner got me the power supply seconds too late. Lost all my work, but the silver lining (on the storm cloud that struck the lightning bolt that killed 323 reindeer in Norway) is saving works again. "Yay".

It does suck when you loose work, I have been there.  Fusion is hardly the first program to crash or hang up, save often has been a hallmark of computers ever since they were invented.

The ridiculous part is thinking this is AD doesn't care or try to make the app robust or that they have no competition.

this save issue thread was from 2016... and the problem still exists?  what kind of bullsh** is this?  Horrible interface... just horrible and clearly nothing has been fixed.

Nobody has posted to this thread in 4 years.

Are you experiencing this problem currently? Because if you read the comments there was an answer posted in a separate thread redirecting people away from this page.

And another 5 years later the problem is still there. Tried all suggestions I've seen, nothing works. Had three projects open, the two that were saved previously worked fine to save, but the new project refuses to save. Nothing happens when I hit Save or Export, don't see any errors either.
