uploaded dxf comes in the wrong size/units

Anonymous

Hi,

I've been trying to upload a dxf 2D file for an old EZCAM software in the correct size and units (in). the upload works fine accept the size is off. A length that should measure 6.000 inches only measures 2.3622...?? The reduction is symmetrical in both 2D axis.

In the recent 3 years past I have uploaded these  2D dxf's on to a version of Autocadlite without problems.

A solution for uploading to size would sure help.

Alternately,  a process to adjust by percentage 'scaling' back to size would also do the trick as I only have 20 or 30 files to do and in the sampleing I did they were all off by the same scale.

Thanks

Have you seen the update today, they've added Insert DXF to the Insert menu. I just gave it a try with one of the Rhino DXF file and selected One Sketch Per Layer and got this, correct scale and alignment.

I'll take a look at the Moi file latter and see if I can come up with any suggestions. One thing that might cause you problems is some of the sketches are above the sketch plane, you might find it easier to have all you sketched at Z0.0 in Moi\Rhino then move to the correct Z height after import.

I just uploaded the update and yes now one can just insert a dxf file in a sketch no problem. Except now all the layers are combine into a single sketch in front of your eyes. At least we can still use the workflow I suggested in post #20 and keep all layers translated into individual named sketch.

If I may suggest, that in the next update adding an option to keep or not each individual layers if any of course.

Thanks,

Yves

Did you see this option on the import dialog.  One Sketch Per Layer

Sorry, I must be blind or something I completely mist the option of keeping individual layers, my apologies.

Since I'm the one using Moi, I'll try some of the options that are available, For the Moi export I tried pratically all option I have and it doesn't work. I'm missing layers and of course their content. Seems I'll have to go through Rhino, not a big deal.

edit:

It seems F360 doesn't see some of the content of the Moi dxf export for some reason but Rhino does import all of it, so it must be there.

Although Rhino opens the Moi file it would no be a lot of use in Fusion, all the arcs in the polycurves have been interpolated in short lines. The highlighted curve in this image is made from 16008 line segments, does Moi have any options for how it exports curves and polycurves, it might work better if you explode all the polycurves before export. One tip if you go through Rhino is to run simplify before the export.

Max,

Moi as 3 options to export its nurb curves to DXF, polylines, splines or cubic splines. I tried them all and none seems to change anything in F360. I have no clue other that some content doesn't show in F360 while the same file import without fuss in Rhino.

The new insert DXF command work fine with dxf files from Rhino, so I'll stick to that for now.

Thanks,

Yves

Hi,

Sorry I'm Newbye with Fusion360

If Dxf files are imported 10 times to big, is there ny way to rescale sketches before starting adding 3D geometry ?

Thanks

Yes.

  • Pick the command: Modify > Scale
  • Select the sketch in the browser.
  • Pick a point to scale around.
  • Add your scale factor.

Thanks,

You are asking the same question here, please do not double post it confuses those trying to help.

also worth pointing out:  Use Insert DXF to insert a DXF.  This allows you to specify the units:

I use sketch and export to DXF sometimes and I would like to be able to specify units. At the moment I have to scale the DXF by 10 to get the correct size.

The units for an exported dxf are set in the Document Settings of each file.  If you're exporting for a 3d printer, most of the slicers (except PrusaSlicer) only accept millimeters, so you must have millimeters set in the Units field.  If you have a dxf which has the wrong units set, please attach it to the thread.

p.s. You can verify the units in a dxf by checking

$INSUNITS

70

Default drawing units for AutoCAD DesignCenter blocks:

0 = Unitless; 1 = Inches; 2 = Feet; 3 = Miles; 4 = Millimeters;

5 = Centimeters; 6 = Meters; 7 = Kilometers; 8 = Microinches;

9 = Mils; 10 = Yards; 11 = Angstroms; 12 = Nanometers;

13 = Microns; 14 = Decimeters; 15 = Decameters;

16 = Hectometers; 17 = Gigameters; 18 = Astronomical units;

19 = Light years; 20 = Parsecs

I may have to try a design in Parsecs 😀

In the file I find

$INSUNITS
70
4
9

When I bring a DXF file into Enroute software it comes in as very small- I scale it up by 10 to make it right. When I use Autodesk to generate DXFs they come into Enroute correctly. I will experiment further.

Thanks. Mike.

it’s strange, the”4” in $INSUNITS means “millimeters” so there is no reason to scale it except if Enroute don’t take care of the unit you may ask them.

but if file exported by AutoCAD works, this behavior is really strange.

generally, when softwares donner take care about the unit, either they ask at the opening or they open the file in inches...
